Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Humid season is here. Weatherman is telling people to stay inside today.

It's been swinging back and forth between hot, but pleasant, and armpit weather over the last week, here.

This office is especially bad but most of my recent experiences have been pretty good. Last year I saw a dermatologist for the first time and went back several times for minor procedures. The doctor was great and the support staff were very helpful and attentive.

The PA said to make sure to wear at least SPF30. I figure SPF30 barely slows down the tendency of my pasty white skin to start bubbling and smoking in full sun, like Dracula.

Free latte day for me today, as the gentleman this was prepared for actually wanted it iced.

I was hoping to get some laundry in but the local Community Band has a gig downtown starting on less than an hour...

I've been running SPF 50 as of late, seems to do the job

I use SPF 60, and on long rides I reapply halfway through.

We were religious about slathering The Boys with sunscreen, esp. TOB, because as a kid he was so pale and blond that more than once people asked if he was albino, No pink eyes, though. Anyway one memorable time, Mrs GJ was so focused on slathering The Boys that she only got partway through slathering herself, leading to a sunburn on her back, except for where her hand had started applying it. She had a hand-shaped unburned patch. I wish I'd taken a picture.

Mrs Johns' hairdresser is a red head and very light skinned. She refuses to use sunscreen even though she spends a lot of time outside. Mrs says she is starting to look like a bbq potato chip, lots of sun damage. They were discussing this while Mrs J was in the chair and one of the other customers said sun screen causes cancer and the hairdresser said that's why she doesn't use it.

I'm sure that misinformation came from the story a few years back where certain brands of sunscreen were found to have benzine in them.

Another great game last night. I hope the New York basketball Knickerbockers prevail.

The Stanley Cup finals have also been fun to watch.

It’s getting tougher and tougher to take a ride without dragon boat races breaking out.

After the Wolves lost to the Spurs, I was happy to cheer for SA (or anybody) to beat OKC. Now, I would be thrilled for the Knicks to knock out SA and for KAT to get a ring.

And I bet the hairdresser is up on her vaccinations as well.

It's weird how some piece of information becomes known and some people latch onto it and it becomes gospel. No research, no follow up, just an irrefutable fact from then on.

From what I have read, a majority of decision making is based on emotion. Fear is a big one as well as what car to buy. Logic and science be damned, emotion holds the strong suit. If you ever watch The Daily Show, where there is a political gathering and they send an “interviewer’ out, he often will gently show them their contradictory thinking/allegiance, which they either rationalize, ignore or laugh off.

And they will latch on because it usually validates a pre-existing belief - which may have been previously planted by some form of media
