Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

who actually wants to live to 100 anyway? I have two case studies

My MIL - it's a goal of hers to reach 100. At 80 she is very healthy and active, hustling my 2.5 toddler up three flights of stairs in our townhome at naptime like its NBD. Amazing. She won't even let me help if she arrives asleep in the stroller.
My mom - talks ad naseum (somewhat morbidly) about how she doesn't need to live into her old age, and how she wants someone to pull the plug rather than have her be "hooked up" for the rest of her life and/or on life support.

For me? IDK but I feel like the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. Age and QOL are correlated and not the same thing. I want to live as long as I can retain some degree of mobility and mental faculty. In my mind - those are gonna go before one reaches 100, unless you're real lucky.

Like most things in life, the approach depends on the details. When it comes to aging, the focus should be on quality of life. I have a patient who turned 101 and she is doing ok and quite sharp and has a good quality of life. That's great, but quite unusual. Most folks are dealing with advanced degenerative disease of one or more systems by the time they are in their 90's, so their quality of life is not so great and many of them are "ready" for the end. It's not much fun to talk about, but we are all mortal.

I do suggest reading book "Being Mortal" but Atul Gawande. Should be mandatory reading IMO.

The thing about the new ones is that there's so much available performance I'd never use. 1+ g of grip? 0-60 around 3 sec? 200 mph top speed? Plus there's something about an old guy with white hair driving a current 'Vette or similar that just doesn't sit right somehow.

If he ain't got it, he ain't got it.

Last year or so, Dan Lloyd on GCN noted that after he retired from racing, his cycling has been on again/off again. Whenever there was a challenge, like raising his FTP, or training for a race or such, he had no problem riding hour upon hour, but without that, he would find himself never throwing a leg over the saddle. He realized that his motivation was always about numbers, and fitness, and meeting a challenge, and not so much about the joy and freedom of riding. I don't know if one can change that, or if you're stuck with it.

My longest layoff came after I'd ridden with a club, mostly 2 rides every weekend for a couple years. I really enjoyed while i was doing it but then after 2 years, come spring I just never got back on the bike, for a couple years. Since then, I've ridden solo almost exclusively, because that's where my joy is.

It's a Philadelphia specialty sandwich, thinly sliced beef & onions & cheese on a sub. Along with the liberty bell and the Rocky steps, that's what Philly is known for.

Great book. You recommended it to me when I found out I have stage 4 metastatic cancer. At that time, my docs weren’t very optimistic and I was pretty stressed out about it. With the book, I’ve learned that we all die so let’s go out comfortably and with dignity and live our life fully till the end.

I needn't reach those performance capabilities to be happy. I want to drive mine fast enough to get a summons just one time. Then from there I'm just cruising around town with the top down for show. Maybe even winking at the girls.

Yeah, could be fun on the track, but seems silly for regular road driving.

I like just plain ol' slow cars with decent gas mileage, I think the Hyundai might be just a bit too slow for me, seems slower than the late '80s/early '90s Corollas I used to drive.

You know what they say...

Sure is pretty alright. This was my view on a bike ride 10 years ago today in Wyoming:

The high desert is magical, much like Martians.

I sure was glad to get away from the trees and the buildings the other day. Jump on I-40, and about 20 mins east of town the whole world just opens up before you.

Most fun I ever had in a car was driving my mid-80's Toyota MR2. It was 30 years old, had 300,000 miles, had 112hp (when new), weighed 2,000 pounds, rear wheel drive all made for a gallon of fun in a pint sized car. I could have the most exciting back road drive and barely break the speed limit. That engine revved to the moon too, I recall the rev limiter kicking in near 8,000 rpm.

That was my plan anyway, but if you and Doc recommend it I'll have to check it out.

Speaking of which, what happened to that ride you were going to do on the interstate?

I like the Challenger, because it's comfy, looks nice, reminds me of my youth, and can be fast if called upon. My former coworker has an Audi RS3, the sportiest of the A3 family. I rode with him ONCE in that thing. The suspension is so stiff, it felt lie no suspension at all! Maybe fun on the track, but on the streets with the usual potholes and patches and ****? Sheer torture.

You know what they say...

Live slow. Die in late middle age. Leave an atherosclerotic corpse.
