Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here's a S-Works roubaix. If I remember the FSA and Cane Creek product lines correctly, manufacturers can choose a variety of different height "cones" for the top of their headsets. I've seen a Roubaix with a very low-profile zero stack integrated headset that takes about 1.75cm off the height depicted in this photo

OK I've done some research. The Robaix is a not a direct comparison to the CAAD8 it's more in line with the Synapse. To compare apples to apples you would have to use the Tarmac v CAAD8. In a '54' (the nearest is the Tarmac w/548mm top tube CAAD8 546mm top tube). The Tarmac has 130mm head tube while the CAAD8 has a 145mm top tube.

I wasn't trying to do a direct comparison at all, but to show the widest possible difference between two very divergent frame designs that would put the rider in two different positions. Roubaix vs. CAAD8 (R1000/R3000) as an example of two bikes in the same price category that an LBS might recommend to somebody 40+ with money to spend.

However I have seen Roubaixes set up in low-profile 'race' positions, with a low profile headset and no spacers. This one is owned by a guy from weight weenies:

  1. Holding the bike steady by the bars while standing behind it, swing one leg behind and over the saddle.
  2. Sit on the saddle.
  3. Give a small push off the ground and lift feet.
  4. Clip in shoes.

Do you do it differently somehow?
When i am in step no.2 I am already tipping over. When you are swinging your leg over the saddle do you push off simultaneously?
