What is it with Webcor riders?
Most of the cyclists I encounter on the road are friendly, courteous, and responsible. Some of them are even Webcor riders. Unfortunately, they seem to be the exception. My most recent irritation? I was doing 20 mph on Foot Hill the other day when I heard a rider approaching from the rear. I drifted right just a bit to give him more room to pass and he still passed me on the right, and didn't say a word. "On your right?", perhaps? There wasn't any traffic and he had plenty of room to pass on the left *before* I moved to the right.
Another time, I was climbing Old La Honda and was well over to the right. A Webcor guy passed on my left so close I could have adjusted the trim on his front derailleur without straightening my elbow. I never heard him coming, so I said "Hey, thanks for the warning" and got sneering attitude in return.
Many of my riding friends report similar behavior and a harbor a general dislike for Webcor riders. Yeah, lots of them are stronger and faster than we are, but lots of them aren't. It seems when they buy their jerseys they get a free side of attitude, regardless of their ability. I'd much rather wear a T-Moble uniform and look like a poseur than ever put on a Webcor jersey and look like a dick.

That's just wrong about that dude trying to pass you on the right on foothill. Ok so foothill is rather wide in some places, compared with most bike lanes. However, he shouldn't have passed you on the right unless there was a major road hazard which would have made it dangerous to pass on the left. From what you said this didn't seem to be the case, so the guy was just being a jerk.
I have no idea what their deal is. I have noticed a bit of elitism in their ranks which is one reason why I stayed aaway from them when I was looking for a team to join. I'd rather travel a longer distance to be with a team of people that are good racers and cool people than to go next door to a team that can't be good examples on the road.

Nice to see so many people on here from the area...
I wouldn't go as far to say 'whats with webcor' since I've had nice conversations with many of them while at rest stops or on their group rides. There are jerks everywhere you go, and some of them ride bikes.

You know, I've noticed the same behavior from people kitted up in Webcor. BUT, they're not all on the professional team. They're probably just members of the Alto Velo club, I think anyone can join.
I don't think I ever got a hello back from any of the ones I've greeted...

Maybe because there are so many Webcor/Alto Velo members in the peninulsa area, you just notice it more. A nice thing about the club that it is non-elitist. Anyone can join. Good guys and jerks alike.
I generally try to be nice and say "Hi", "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon", or whatever and try to lead by example. But if you get passed by the B-Ride on a Saturday morning, don't expect everyone to greet you individually.

Hmm haven't really noticed the attitude you described. Personally I think Stanford riders are way more elitist than any other group in the area, but my opinion might be biased.

Webcor. Bunch of Disco wannabes.
Each rider probably earns enough $ to fill up their gas tank, that's it.
Now here's a bike team...

Yes, my general experience with Alto Velo riders has been bad. I have been passed by/passed several and never gotten anything but attitude and snottiness from them.

Webcor riders certainly are a group of individuals. One passed me on Old La Honda Sunday and didn't just ignore me, but frowned that he didn't have to work harder to pass me.
But I have to say that I'm the sort of guy that laughs at anyone with a Webcor jersey so maybe they're just expecting it.
It doesn't pay to get upset at them. They're what they are and no one but old man time is going to change them and their attitudes.

I wear webcor kit and yes, you can buy the kit online or through a retailer who sales the jerseys from her home, based in Redwood City. I ride around the Stanford campus and Palo Alto a lot. Webcor everywhere I go and I think 8 out of the 10 webcor jerseys I see averaged around 19 mph, so they're definitely not pros. I average 25 mph, so I try to act professionally. However, I've never passed anyone on the right...that's just stupid and unsafe. Don't make generalization based on jerseys...since most people like to look their best, regardless of riding ability.

Pro men's team is no more, but
Chris Horner was on the 2005 team. The present pro Women's team kicks ass. The amature club/team is a miss match of very strong riders and some B-ride pack fodder.

I wonder who the anti-Webcor/AltoVelo posters are comparing us to? Road cyclists in general or other racing clubs? How often are the riders on SJBC, LGBRC, MVV, LeVillage, or PenVelo exchanging pleasantries with you as you/they pass?
I generally say "On your left" or something to folks I pass on the road. But I can tell you that there aren't a lot of times other riders will say a darn thing if they pass you. So, it's a two-way street. folks. If you go out for an easy ride in your kit, everyone thinks it's a race.

My comparison was with road cyclists in general, including other racing clubs. My beef was never about about not exchanging pleasantries, it was about rude (and occasionally dangerous) behavior I've seen exhibited by Webcor/AltoVelo riders. My riding is training and I certainly don't exchange pleasantries with everyone I pass, but I do let them know I'm there, and never blow by them on the right.

I was sorta pacing a Webcor guy up Kennedy Road (not sure of the grade, perhaps 7-8% is my uninformed guess, but he was keeping up with me on a mountain bike... frustrating...) and on the last quarter mile the road flattens out a little bit, so I led him out on a sprint. We picked it up from 7 to 18 mph and right before I meet up with the rest of my shop ride group, I let him get away.
Later at the bike shop, I'm talking to a couple Cat 2s who joke that Webcor are just a big buncha tools. I say, ''If you guys had only told me they were all tools beforehand, I wouldn't have let him get away.'' To which they say, ''Oh, don't say that. Not all of them are tools.''
''Just most of 'em.''
