What is OAS, PACC?
I am a lone wolf at HHH First time but not my first century.
I avg 18mph+ over 100 mi.
I take it 6:10 is a 25mph group....
My problem is that I need to stop to reload on water and drink, every 20 miles....otherwise by mile 60 I am cramping in the legs...
My goal is 19mph and a sprint finish.

OAS is a group of rides out of the Plano Bicycle Association (PBA) that are fast and furious...oh and long too. Cycling skills are required in these rides. No jittery joes.
The 6:10 group will regularly surge to 30+ and that's not on the downhill either. Downhill they'll run 32-40 depending on wind. That said, their average back at the barn is only 19.5 - 20.2 usually. Gives ya a good idea about what averages mean - nutin.

When riding in a large group and drafting you can go quite a bit faster than when you ride solo. I think more people can manage 19-20 mph average in a large group ride [on our generally flat roads] for 35 miles than they think - as long as they stay in the draft and away from the front of the group.
But keeping up on those surges ... that's another story. And good training for races which is why it happens in these kinds of rides.
I have never done a Popsicle ride but plan to make the 610 tomorrow night.

I'm going to need some more experience in smaller groups before I feel comfortable in a high speed paceline of any sort. But I do agree that in a draft you can maintain a lot higher speed for alonger distance.
Jeff, your of course welcome to join us on the Sat morning ride out of RBM. I'm thinking of taking the 'Cuda down towards White Rock. With the south winds as of late, every body we can get to share the wind blocking duties on the way down will be great.
This is going to be my first trip to HHH, and my second Metric Century (heck, first one was nearly a year ago now!) I'm looking forward to it, though these evening heat training rides I've been, well, hot. Felt good to get out on one of the two road bikes again today after riding the heavy commuter/touring frame the last several days.

Speaking of the heat, on my commute home yesterday, it was burning hot and I was riding into the 20 mph northerly wind with a 20# backpack (including water bladder). I decided to make the best of the wind and my excess water so I kept sucking water from the tube and "misting" myself.
Gross? Yes
Desperate? Yes
But it worked as I was still able to average just under 17 mph for the route

It takes time to get there. Riding with faster groups is one way to do it. And the other is to do intervals when riding solo. I do both and in the last year have improved quite a bit and get dropped a lot less than I used to. Oh, but I still get dropped :-)

Thanks for the invite. Usually I ride with a group on Saturday for 60-70 miles. This Saturday we are going to ride Hot Rocks in Rockwall. From what I hear it is a tough ride at the front as there is prize money at stake. So a lot of CAT 1/2 guys in there. I have no illusions about being able to keep up the entire 100k but I'll see how long I can hang in the pack.

So guys, I am thinking Sunday. 8am. Here. It's an Albertson's here in Denton where Kevin and I met up last time.
45-50 miles 15-17 mph.
Shall we start the list?

Kevin, great to hear you're feeling better!
I got up at the crack-o-dawn this morning and got over to RBM for the ride. Unforunately Jeff's youngest boy kept him and his wife up all night and he had to bail. And Marty is still battling some back problems (hope you get better soon!) so it was just me and Andy who's been riding now for about 2 months maybe. He did pretty well and has improved a lot since our last ride together. We rolled out to Sache and back for about 30mi. On the way out we started getting a few drops around the Breckenridge park but outran the majority of the rain. However on the way back we got to ride through VERY wet roads from Breckenridge all the way to I-75. Caught a little rain as we approached I-75 too.
On a side note, if anyone has any doubts if they should try Kool-Stop salmon pads, DO IT. This was my first wet ride and while my back brake (Shimano 105 pads) lost probably 50+% of their braking power, the fronts lost MAYBE 10% of theirs. I'll be updgrading the rear pads asap now.
See Fred and Kevin tomorrow.

It feels weird being off of the bike two days in a row. I only got in 130 miles this week compared to my 217 last week. I think my body was telling me to take a break. I keep looking outside and debating on riding but the wifey also thinks I should rest so she is encouraging me to rest today.
I will be well rested for tomorrow. I won't be bringing my Camelbak so a refuel stop would be nice.

A refuel would be VERY nice. I only went through part of my Cytomax supplies today, but the rain was keeping me much cooler than usual.
Fred, you have a route in mind?

Yeah, I have route that can take us about 45-50 miles. I plan to ride into town to meet you guys for the ride. One of the guys I ride with from the LBS will probably be joining us as well.

I'm in for Sunday. Is 8am the meet time or the time you will be rolling out? I am coming from FtWorth so I want to have enough time to get to Denton.
I'll be carrying bottles only so I also vote for a refueling stop.

Kevin,
I was thinking we can do the route you and I did last time, albeit a bit easier of a pace this time.

I did a 95 mile ride today that absolutely kicked my butt in the last 20 miles.....I only had 5hrs sleep and I didn't eat right....and then the dang heat was just torture today....No cloud cover the last 20 miles.....it was around 98 degrees. I still came in with a 16.4 mph.....not wonderful but considering I was barely turning the cranks over in a few places....I don't feel too bad. Last time I did 83 on the same route at 18.1mph.
I think I am ready.
