Cyclists are INSANE.
I just beat my all-time 3-year record. It was rainy, strong headwind, but I did it. I RODE LIKE A DOPED UP TAMMY THOMAS ON A UCI-ILLEGAL BIKE AFTER SMOKING A JOINT LACED WITH PCP AND EMBALMING FLUID.
At the end of this, I could barely pedal. At the last turn, I stuck my right hand out ALL the way to signal a turn, and a car that had plenty of enough time to see me suddenly skid within 10 feet of me. Nice.
What's significant about this? I looked over and noticed she was hot. I kept my line. I was calm and composed.
I do think cyclists are tough. If you haven't gone out and pushed the limit recently, DO IT!

I love rides like that. I always suffer and ride hard on my rides, but sometimes I'm just in the zone --- and it's totally different.
There was a solo loop I did from downtown Denver up to Evergreen and back (85 miles). I was hit by a massive thunderstorm that was rolling off the mountains. I got into that zone and was just tearing it up for the whole ride. On the way back, I was descending 285 at 40mph in a downpour. It was just awesome.

Come down to San Antonio and ride the course when the wind is against you most of the time, then comment.

MPH is meaningless -- as are number of miles.

I would be happy to average 18mph on just about any course with a hint of a headwind. 20 and I would be ecstatic.
A few days ago I was riding into a horrendous wind from the south that was beating me down to 10mph. 10!! I felt like I was on my mountainbike hitting some hellacious singletrack. It was so bad I considered tacking to gain some extra speed

Bikes: More than I need, really.
A P-R is a P-R. He wasn't out to beat YOUR P-R because that's not a P-R; that's a YOUR-R.
Besides, by the looks of it, he was wearing a big purple Barney suit.
That thing probably catches a lot of wind.

18mph for a solid 30min on most any road is going to include stops at lights, turns, dealing with traffic, etc. Any experienced cyclist will know these things, and know that an 18mph 'avg' is only achieved by rolling at 20-22mph a fair bit of the time. Put me on an open road out in the middle of no where and yeah, its easier to avg 18+. Put me in the middle of Dallas on a Saturday afternoon and it's a whole different story.

Congrats on the new PR! Allways a great rush when you do that. I have a +/- 17.3 mile loop I do for a P-R 3-4 time a year. I can echo the comments on riding on the road, as this course has many starts/stops that screw up the avg speed. I do know that if I can do it under an hour, I'm exhausted. I haven't had a new P-R in like two years, so I'll have to get to work on that. I turn 50 tomorrow, so seems like a good goal for this year...
And ohsmily, not to heap it on, but I did a computrainer ride on Friday at the LBS where I averaged 13.1 mph, and it was one of the hardest rides in recent memory, with average watts above my LT for the hour. I know how hard I worked and the mph just don't tell the whole story.

Just to echo what everyone else is saying, when I ride the scenic loop route out towards Boerne, I would be thrilled to average 18mph, it is not called the Hill Country for no reason!
