Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh yeah, you're an EXPERT on this up in Dearborn Michlgan. Good grief ElJ, come to Nyack, NY on a Sunday morning. The OCP Factor would warp your Midwestern mind completely. Trust me on this.

I'm trying to imagine how bad it gets at the Palo Alto Starbucks, but that's like a Cubs fan knowing World Series Joy. I do imagine however that Manhattan and its surrounding region (Nyack is the destination for all outward bound OCP NYers) probably do have NoCal OCPs outnumbered.

Here's a clue: an acquaintance of mine opened a bike shop in Manhattan Jan. 1 of 2006. By October of 2006 he had surpassed $1 million in gross sales and he was the WORLD's LARGEST SEROTTA DEALER. His average bike sale price: approx. $5500.

OHHHHH SEEEEEE PEEEEEEEEE

Say it with me.

Can I get a witness?

OK, fine -- I'm with you.

Before I stumblied upon this board, I discovered what I now know to be OCPers sitting outside a Starbucks, in full team kit with gleaming Madones. They were also near a Pearl Izumi store in the same very nice little complex. They may have ridden after their Starbucks visit, but I am willing to wager that the "ride" to Starbucks wasn't exactly strenuous...

Then again, I must have a little OCP in me in that I park my bike in my office in the hopes that someday somebody will recognize it for what it is (which actually happened one day).

I wasn't familiar with Merlin. Checked their website. Beautiful bikes. The Fully Engraved Cyrene was pure art. You can consider me a WOCP.

I was out riding one day and it was cold and extremely windy. I had screwed up the route and was going into a 30 mph wind on the way home. I decided to stop at Starbucks and warm up. I ordered a big ol' tall cup of coffee, assuming I was ordering a 16 oz. cup like everyone else had. But they gave me this small cup. I haven't been back since.

ride a few weekends a year down in Miami, but never stopped at La Carreta... have always gone with the groups to 7-11... OCP there too... but some good riders in the bunch even if they are a dangerous bunch going thru lights, stop signs, toll booths, etc..
and I don't park near by either.. we just hammer the 27 miles from aventura mall and back..

If you're looking for a new ride.. then the best showroom is the nyack coffee shop any weekend morning... More high end bikes there then any bike shop I have visited..

I am an OCP... Assos clad on a custom Seven... and if you don't like it, then don't draft behind my big rear end..

I agree with the toronto guys. I live in the GTA and there are tons of OCPs. I deal with tons at the bike shop too. Some are really stuck up, and ask to be called Mr. The funny thing is lots of them have huge guts and ride $5000 bikes.

No myth.

On my ride a few days ago I saw a guy going slowly up the hill on the opposite side of the road as me. I didn't really see the bike, so I can't say how expensive it was, but he was wearing a faux team jersey/shorts.

The OCP catch?

The man was OBESE. Not just pudgy, overweight. OBESE. I can't beleive they make bike outfits that large!

Now, don't get me wrong. I think it's wonderful the man is out getting in shape riding a bike. But to start out with a road bike and team kit? That's dellusional.

The OCP are definitely amongst us in Alberta, I pass them on my Sunday ride as they sit and drink coffee. Can't speak to their average speed, for all I know they drive out there and park their bikes out front!

Whatever happened to riding your own ride and not worrying about what other people think, do, wear or ride?

I pose naked with my bike in my own living room, and take photos. Is that OCP or just normal?

That would definitely be a NO-NO for all OCP riders.

They do make carbon fiber kickstands for Harley-Davidsons but that's a whole new thread on OCP.

We start all our club rides next to a coffee shop. However the coffee shop is at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to starbucks and is next to the bike shop.
