Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here's the rule for self-Fred-determination: if you have to ask, you're a Fred.

Let's see, 2K bike (Giant TCR2) - check, overweight - check, Camelbak with about 20lbs of $#17 in it - check and I care to chase down folks. Unfortunately at one point we didn't see a single cyclist going in the same direction for 4 seasons (club rides don't count) that more than 20,000 miles so we've had to resort to 2 year olds on their trikes. We saw two of those after the 4 seasons, we had to have something to break the streak!

And just so you don't doubt my mileage claims, my routes. We did the "Cranbury - Manalapan - Plumstead" (65 miles) last Saturday and I think we'll do "Cranbury-Princeton-Ringo-Sergentsville" (70 miles) but I'll have to add at least 5 miles to keep on track for my double century training.

I'd love to hear a guess from forum members on what the percentage of Fred's to Elites we have using this forum. Hate to say it but at my age I probably fit in the Fred category more then the elite group. I still consider myself pretty fast, I put on a lot of miles and have a couple nice bikes but I don't weigh 170 lbs. any more. To be honest with you, I can live with that.

What kind of elite rider would hang out and yak about bike stuff with a bunch of Freds? Based on that logic, the percentage would be 100% Freds, 0% elite....

Bikes: A few.

Jimbud you present a conundrum:

To be elite you need to be of say a 20% minority (or perhaps less). Given the either/or proposition of Fred or Elitist, most of us will deny being a Fred but statistically can't be a true elitist either.

So I think we need Euro to return and offer his rankings.

I am uncategorizable, but this year my goal is to be in the top 1000 freds in my country.

CC, you are arguably the Mother of all Freds already. I wouldn't worry about cracking the top 1000.

I never said I was 'Elite'. I am Elite-IST. That's like being snobby without being rich.

Even without disco kit? So I have already surpassed Euro. I always knew I was a god...or goddess.

Be afraid... be very afraid

She'll only come out at night
The lean and hungry type
Nothing is new, I've seen her here before
Watching and waiting
Ooh, she's sittin' with you but her eyes are on the door

So many have paid to see
What you think you're gettin' for free
The woman is wild, a she-cat tamed by the purr of a Jaguar
Money's the matter
If you're in it for love, you ain't gonna get too far

(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She's a fredeater

I wouldn't if I were you
I know what she can do
She's deadly man, she could really rip your world apart
Mind over matter
Ooh, the beauty is there but a beast is in the heart

(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She's a fredeater

------ saxophone ------

Ooh,
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Here she comes, Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Whoa-oh, here she comes. Watch out) She's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes. She's a fredeater) Ooh, she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Here she comes, she's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes. Watch out) She'll only come out at night, ooh
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Here she comes, she's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes. She's a fredeater) The woman is wild, woo
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Here she comes. Watch out boy, watch out boy
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Oh, watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Yeah, yeah, she's a fredeater
(Oh-oh, here she comes. She's a fredeater) She's watching and waiting, ooh
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Oh, she's a fredeater

Well since I am black can I be a "Tyrone?"
