Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Going after the owners works. We're well up over $25,000 in payments we haven't had to make for property damage and various surgeries. Haven't even really started the meat and potatoes final settlement value negotiations.

I'm not sure what else there is to say. You didn't really offer advice or ask for any either. That leaves us with a discussion of hitting dogs.

Say...how is the dog?

+1 on the mace, works on 4 footed and 2 footed animals that you may run across on the road.

The dog was out of its owner's control. It gave chase, and the chase resulted in injury and property damage.

I'm well aware that there were no bites. I wouldn't hesitate to use the term "attack" with the police. The tone of the owner's response and how seriously the police regard this incident will probably change quite a bit.

Who knows...maybe the dog would have bit if it hadn't been impacted by the bicycle it was chasing? I certainly don't...and neither do the police. And the owner can't reasonably swear to that either. Whatever the case may be, the owner is responsible for the damages. The term "attack" may prompt more assertive action.

You should have given him a taste of a heavy duty Zefal frame pump the first day you met him ... Works for me.

I like all of the asinine threads you've created.

Keep up the good work.

my friend's brother had a paper route. the same dog attacked him every time he went to the house. the dog would always chase us on our bikes. well anyway my friend kicked the dog one day and it never attacked him again. i do not support punting yorkshire terriers, however perhaps this dog will leave you alone now that you ran it over.

Have some compassion. It's not the dog's fault, it's the owner. If anything, kill them.

I've encountered several dogs on my regular routes to work and for pleasure rides. It's worth taking the time to train them not to chase bikes. It's not hard, it doesn't take long, and it works.

The other option is to go slow where you know they are, or bypass the area if you can.

Correct. I slow down when turning onto my street because of that little dog. It's not worth the hassle and possible lawsuit and pain and suffering. And the dog is a nice dog. It just doesn't trust weird, bright colored animals with circular legs. Can't really blame it, my wife doesn't trust them either!!!

X2! Today at the park I just ran into a tense situation... There was a petite lady (30's, 140lbs max), and she had a full grown rottweiler (average weight being >90lbs for *****es and males) attached to the leash! I don't care how tamed you think your animal is, if something spooks it, a lot of people will be screwed. I also hate when parents let their little boy / girl walk the dog... *sigh* I love dogs, just not dumb pet owners.

go faster next time...i bet the dog doesn't do it again.

i hope you talked to the owners before calling the cops. i'm sure they have better things to do than sort minor stuff like this out.

(how did it appear out of nowhere? especially considering you've had issues with it before. it's a dog, not a cougar Dogs like to announce their presence....though they do have the same instinct to chase moving objects.).

i love the states. you fall off your bike and look for someone to sue...

Poor dog, its not its fault, thats what dogs do for a living, they chase things.

Sounds like whoever killed the dog's owner would be doing the whole town a favor.

Sorry, but your comment had the maturity of an adolescent and no support for your sentiments. It just promotes violence for no apparent reason.
