Thanks! Yeah, I have to admit I was kind of happy with that build. I found a 86 Centurion in a junk bike heap at a LBS. It was in decent shape and had all the original components. I bought it for $75 and sold all the parts off of the frame for about $150. :) I then had the frame blasted and powder coated (was pretty cheap to do). A friend gave me the fork because it was a 1" steerer and wouldn't fit any of his bikes. I had a lot of the components laying around. I though dt shifters would be fun and sure enough Shimano still makes 10 spd downtube shifters (Dura Ace no less), so I got those and the derailers. The frame is made for a slightly narrower real wheel but with a steel frame you can just force it in there and it works fine (it's only a millimeter or so deflection). The bike is Tange 1 steel which is actually pretty light - the bike ended up being a little under 18 pounds.

Your not getting past the price tags of the parts. It's all gray and black, like for a funeral. Ti bikes are either all dull and gray, or a bit shiny....that's it.

wow, that moots is hot. that is basically a few sizes and an slr away from my dream build.

i had a similar idea ravenmore but took it a step further.

i wanted a "retro" bike that completely hid its modern drivetrain. at face value it looks like a typical early 90s italian steel but under the skin you are looking at a "modern" 10spd bike. the record titanium brifters were gutted and turned to 10spd, the c-record crank is wrapped in 10spd chainrings, the monoplanar brakes house modern cartridge brake pads, and soon it will have a "lightweight" set of 28 spoke tubular wheels.

it may not be on the level of the moots, but there is passion in the build. the frameset is a family heirloom, i personally converted the levers, mixed and matched the alloy components to look period correct, and polished the stem (it was anodized grey)

A long long time ago, this thread went from "hot or not" to "post any bike you own"!! There is another thread, a stickie no less, with that name. Not being insulting to anyone, but most bikes in this thread are far from "hot". At least in my opinion. Not to say they are not functional, reliable, good, etc., but that was not the purpose of the thread. So I guess I agree with most of what Garysol said!

Well, this thread is a bit of 'post any bike you own', but with the caveat that we vote 'hot' or 'not'. It seems to me like we should follow your lead and vote all the everyday rides 'not' and reserve the hot for the exceptional.

Yes, Weight Weenies does have a lot of hot bikes and wouldn't you know it, many of those bikes and owners are based in Europe and Asia. Just an observation.

I generally agree with what garysol1 posted too. I understand that hot may be in the eyes of the beholder and that what any one person thinks is hot today may differ tomorrow. I am also take aback by what some think is hot -- assuming that they are posting into this thread because they think their bike is hot and they are looking for a consensus opinion from the BF denizens.

OK, now I'll really go out on a limb. Most of the bikes in this thread are fairly nice, but by my criteria, few are hot. If a bike is set up with the 'style' of a classic racing bike, it goes a long way towards making it hot. That's why I think ravenmore's last bike in this thread is hot and why I picked the two above.

The Moots, however, is not hot in my book because of the setup. Certain things, including the saddle to handlebar drop just kill it for me with the Moots. Very nice bike, but just not hot in my book.

Just to make it sound like I'm contradicting myself, there are definitely hot bikes that are not race bikes, such as the Renovo wooden bikes. Check out their web site. Most of the bikes pictured there are hot.

In summary, hot is personal and hot has a certain "je ne sais quoi" that I know when I see it.

I love the retro build. I'm debating putting the money into modernizing the drive train of an '86 frame I have. How do you find dt shifters with so many gears? Do you have to run a matching Dura Ace front derailleur? It's a great looking bike - I just can't wrap my head around how you did it for under a thousand.

My wallet bike freshly rebuilt with 7900 D/A. I do think it is pretty hot in an off the shelf kinda way....

I too generally agree with this, but I'd say that some leniency should be given. We all work hard for our money, and we all are (generally) proud of our purchases, hence posting them here. Whether they are truly hot custom high end jobs or not, we should all be a little gentler.

Elitism and snobbery are just part of the fun.

No one commented on how hot my Scattante is:(. Though no one cringed when they saw it either, or they cringed so bad they couldn't type out a negative response with their cramped fingers. Either way, that's a win for Scattantes everywhere.

well I might be a new guy to cycling but I prefer the aesthetic of the new bikes to the older ones, but I won't deny they do have a nice look that the new bikes doesn't have.
