As much as I am against their type of marketing, I was thinking of getting a mountain bike from them...
I just don't now if I should get a hard tail or soft tail...
Any help with the decision would be helpful...

I got this:

https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/.../ktblk_600.jpg
I saved tons of money compared to a comparable store bought model.
I'll save even more when the Shill Discount™ kicks in.
Just have to hit a few more forums....

Sorr y for the thread hijack but it wasn't going anywhere anyway...
Thanks for the reply...
I would be riding in the woods no trails over rocks, tree limbs, and holes. Some steep climbs and descents. No jumping off cliffs...
I tried it with my 199? Trek 930 (no front or rear shocks) and it was just too unstable and rough...
I have heard you should start with a hard tail but if I am going to need full shock at some point why not dive in head first...
I am a roadie and have no experience with this shock business..
Thanks again...

I've seen quite a few of these around the streets of NYC, and when I checked out the prices they seem to make sense for people looking for a fixed gear bike at low cost.

I bought this Motobecane Messenger from them. I must say, they gave me a heck of a deal on it because originally I ordered and paid for less expensive bike, which "over sold". Finish on this bike is top notch, it really is a nice bike. The only thing questionable are the brakes, they flex alot, will replace later on. This bike was supposed to be my beater bike, but its actually to nice so I had to buy a different bike for the role as "beater bike". BD customer service was excellent, as well as the way the bike was packaged. This is my second purchase from them, the other was a Kestrel Evoke frame set that they had on these forums for a group buy. That transaction went smooth as well. I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

in your case I'd say you'd be fine with a hardtail 80-100mm of suspension rocks for what you'll be doing
FS is nice but a hard tail does climb better unless you have lock out on your rear shock or a pedaling platform that prevents suspension bob when climbing(usually found in more expensive rear shocks).

Absolutely! This is the perfect shill post....couldn't be done any better.

And that is that Hardtails are lighter and more efficient. Full suspension bikes are good for fast moving over tough terrain. I see your dilemma.

I couldn't have been happier with my purchase from BD either. I was looking at 29ers at the LBS and the BD bike was $500 less for a similarly equipped bike. Granted, I did round file the bars, stem and seatpost that came with the bike, but I had all of the replacement parts in my stock of extras. Even including the 'upgraded' parts, I still came out waaaay ahead.
I've also purchased several things from BikeIsland (BD's parts warehouse) and always received the parts very quickly. I bought my Reynolds Ouzo Pro Cross fork from them. I got an email apologizing for the fact that it wasn't in stock and it would be an extra 4 or 5 days to get it.
Top notch service from the BD folks...
