Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

whatever. it's a sport. I hope for situations to play to my strengths. Why is it acceptable for other folks to hope for their ideal situations to come about, despite them being to the misfortune of others? every race I won last year, someone lost

Even so, indoor trainer riding can't compare to real riding outdoors for enjoyment. Sneaking out for a real ride when possible has got to be better.

I enjoy winning races. When I want to enjoy the outdoors I go hiking.

LoL......I would have preferred it. No mention of snow in the forcast yet I have about 7 inches and it's still dropping. On the bright side though it may crawl to 20 degrees and the wind may drop below 20!!! Yes, I am being a whiny ***** today.

Bike racing is certainly not like teaching where we have to be...

It got to a gorgeous +6C today. I wasn't able to go out cycling because I was writing my final final exam, but still the walking I did was lovely.

It was warm again here and I escaped from work early enough to go for a short ride on the mtb. Supposed to rain tomorrow and until Saturday night. I know, wahhh.
Maybe if it rains on Saturday I can get some friends to go off road riding.

Took the kiddos to see this tonight. Hatching the Past It was a very cool experience. My son, the 5 year old paleontologist, LOVED the exhibit and the dinosaur lecture.

That does sound cool, and it's cool that your son is interested in such things.
I was watching the show "Dirty Jobs", and they went to the La Brea tar pits to work. They have to constantly remove water from the site where they are working, and they have to move a lot of the tar/gook stuff to look for fossils.

They still find lots of bones and other fossils even today. Sometimes, they cast the bones before they move them to a lab for cleaning. Very interesting stuff.

Sounds like a pretty cool episode, John. Will have to keep an eye out for that one...not really a fan of the show, but sounds like that is one I should see.

As I was reading this a news story came on about a mammoth tusk that was just found in San Diego.
It's huge and they haven't unearthed all of it yet.

I thought that all 5 year old boys wanted to be paleontologist or archeologists. I know I sure was mad on dinosaurs when I was that age.

Cool! A road crew that was excavating for a new road a few miles from my house found mastadon remains a few years ago. They're on display at the museum we visited last night. It is easy to forget sometimes that we weren't the first creatures to roam the earth where we live.

Please bring snow! Right now in Melbourne it's 45.4 degrees celcius (113.7 deg F) - our 2nd hottest day ever and it's only 2:30 pm. Even hotter in some suburbs and nearby towns.

I know ... Rowan works outside all day, every day, and has been melting out there. He also has no air conditioning or anything like that in his little house. While I like the heat, I am hoping it doesn't get quite that hot once I get there.
