Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I were vegan, I'd hit up Subway.

Thankfully, however, I am not; and I live in Brooklyn:

I'm on a highly carb deficient diet to drop weight before my serious race season kicks off in mid-May, so no Subway for me. I used to kill it almost every work day before that thougj.

Dude - you need to learn to boil some rice & pasta. Not enough carbs even in a foot-long to sustain you if you're riding 2-4 hours per day. My grocery bill in peak training (14+ hrs per week) is still almost always <$30 / week for the foodstuffs, and I eat a LOT. I'd use the footlongs for a "treat", but for the bulk of your foods, go bulk carbs all the way. Cheaper AND healthier.

Geez if I did that before work having food would be the least of my worries...First off I'd have to figure out how to stay awake...

Hey, I'm with you here, considering what you can get for 5USD, Subway is a really good deal. During my winter training months I made and carried food 5 days a week, but there was one day a week where the only way for me to get food and get it eaten was to get subway. I really enjoyed the break from packed meals, and at this price point you can't touch the variety and volume of fresh vegetables in a meal. (I'm a vegetarian so eating a high volume of food comes as part of the territory.)

I'm the sort to weigh out food to the ounce to find the best value, and as I recall, the tuna nets you more protein per sandwich than any of the other 5USD sub, and then they will pile on enough veg to be a full salad besides. If you ask for more of one or two vegs beyond what they originally give you they almost always will....

Dude, I've done my homework for the last two years I don't need nutrition advice. By the time I get my Subway game on my carbs have long been taken care of.

Mon-Thurs I work 1-10/12 PM, so an average day for me is wake up at 7-8 ride 2-4 hours, go home make recovery food and breakfast. Then make lunch and dinner and then commute 45-60 min to work, go home and prepare my bike to do it again the next day. I try and get one 50-70 mile ride in before work that's the day I usually hit up subway for dinner and use the time saved making a pasta dinner or stir fry like i normally would to get the extra hour or so in on the bike.

All I can say is, it's hectic and tests my dedication to training.

If i'm really desperate and did a real long hard ride, Chipolte is the way to the promised land. Otherwise i'd rather have something homemade or along the homemade lines.

subway - the best fastfood option for a cyclist when you're in hicksville.
