Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shared this in the Addiction thread a couple weeks ago, but this is a better place for it-

That's Skyline Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Clouds rolling up and over the top of the mountains made for some cool fog moments.

Too much scenic scenery up in this piece. Time to bring it back down to earth with the stunner that is Moreno Valley, California.

Gawd I hate cracked asphalt like that. I "take the lane" by riding to the left of it if the road isn't too busy, but I keep looking back to see if any cars are coming up behind me, necessitating a prudent swerve back to the right edge of the asphalt.

Though in this photo it looks like the tarmac to the right of the cracked part is probably good enough to ride on.

That was my photo that started this thread some years ago. I'm glad to see it's still alive.

Here's a more recent photo, made a few weeks ago below Lone Pine Peak, while starting out on a ride up the Whitney Portal Road, at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in California:

Now that I regularly ride with a Take-A-Look mirror attached to my glasses, stuff like this is much easier. It took time to gain the skill to know for sure that when there is no one in the mirror, there is really no one behind me. But it was worth it, and now I can take a quick look and then move left without turning my head. Try one; you might thank me. You can attach it to your helmet if you prefer.

No need for a mirror on that stretch of road. I could have counted the cars that passed (both ways) on one hand, over a stretch of several miles. Which is probably why the pavement looks like that-- just no reason to re-pave it.
