Remembering Piuma Road in the Santa Monica mountains before these fires. My close climbing rides are going to be different now.

This is the first weekend since the fires, that going north, PCH was open past Topanga/PCH. A good friend said Piuma was untouched so we rode Las Flores Canyon to Piuma to Malibu Canyon today. It’s fine and made for a good ride, very little traffic made it even better. When we came down by Pepperdine we rode north on PCH to where the fire started to come down to the ocean. I talked to the State trooper stationed there and he said the canyon roads from there to Decker Canyon were closed so that area probably isn't so scenic anymore . It will be awhile before i ride in the SM’s again so i’ll have to wait for those canyon rides, which is for the best

Will be interesting to see what the new and changed roads look like. Please post some photos when you have a chance.
Mullholland, Decker, Encinal, Potrero, Latigo, however, remain to be seen. My club has been mostly avoiding the area so crews can deal with debris, electrical, etc. It's a real mess out there. :( https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...eabedcdc60.png |

Thank you for this. I was at that exact spot in September 1996. Your photo brought back memories of a great trip.

"triangle" is nearly razor sharp. i still like the out of focus part of the pic tho. makes me feel like we were descending faster. :P |

Went up Stunt and down Piuma on Friday and neither were really touched by the fire.

Good news is that Phil Gaimon has a lot of those Malibu-area canyon climbs memorialized in their pre-fire state with his KOM videos. Bad news is that's not much solace for you Cali folks :(

^east of los virgines rd/malibu canyon rd is okay. it’s the most ridden part of the santa monicas as it is. west of that, the traffic and cyclists thin out. it’ll take 5+ years for the woolsey area fire (roughly pch s to potrero/lake sherwood n to deer creek w to malibu canyon e) to appreciably grow back and recover just enough. if we get a good rain year, the wildflowers will be tremendous as will be the mudslides. |

yah,,,almost to the top of artist's drive in death valley np. deceivingly wicked ascent for a few miles until a dynamite descent...then another wtf ascent paired with more wild descending. a challenging, fun and scenic loop.
We did a few other Death Valley rides on that trip and scoped out Titus Canyon Road, which I hope to ride one day. That's a MTB ride and it would be a long day, but it's very scenic, with a ghost town along the way. |
