Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Guess i'm not a poser. Had my Fuji a year in Aug and ready to turn 3400 miles. I almost never talk to anybody on rides, like stop and talk but a few times i stopped for whatever reason,i remember a couple of guys taking water and one looked and said, they still make Fuji's? I said, sure, its an 03. He said oh yea,no downtube shifters, nice. I just figured he was an ass and passed them after a few miles but they were talking more then riding.

So if I was this great pro-peloton rider that rolled up to you on a $16k bike and acted all cocky to you, that'd be okay?
I guess you're just trolling, but just in case you're simply not reading my posts, I'll say it one last time: they would not be poseurs. That clear enough for you? If not, read it a few times before posting another comment trying to clarify something that can't be any clearer. Geez. Talk about having an axe to grind

Maybe its just the difference between hearing it & seeing the expressions and reading it, but that doesn't sound like an insult, just a guy that doesn't pay attention bikes that aren't at the high-end being surpised by a decent Fuji bike. I guess you have to be there to know the intent.

I think you're reading more into this than you should. Fuji's don't have great distribution in the U.S. At least I don't see any Fuji's at the bike shops in the Bay Area that I go into. A Fuji Royale was my first "serious" bike back in the late 70's and they were pretty popular. I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped being imported into U.S. for a few years. I could easily imagine someone thinking that Fuji stopped making bikes and making that comment. Doesn't mean he's an ass.

Nolageek, I was gonna reply with a rebuttal to your post, but after reading your bio, I see no need . Instead, I'll offer some advice: Turn off your VCR/DVD and go ride your bike. It'll serve you better in the long run (and you might actually meet some real women)...

This thread reminds me of a sociology professor I had in college. An earnest communist nutjob this guy. One day, he said that we'd all be better off if we drove the same model of car. They'd be cheaper and eliminate elitist, angry drivers.

So I raised my hand, he immediately called on me, and I said:
"I drive a Honda Civic. Why don't you give a local dealership a call and see if you can take one for a spin."

Point: there will always be riders of different abilities on different bikes. Deal.

Believe what you want.

Ha ha! If only I had been that bold in college...

He's asking you if it'd be OK for a NON poseur to ack cocky and ass-like to you.
Nola, sorry to take such a hard line. The hyphen threw me off and I missed the "to". What I read was: "He's asking you if it'd be OK for a NON poseur to ack cocky and an ass- like you" (which is odd since I read it 3x ). Sorry. That just set me off. My fault.
To be perfectly honest, the porn part of your bio was just a bit TOO honest for me , and if it is true, my advice still stands, except for changing "women" to "men" . I didn't see the "queer" part (and I hope that "Sad, eh?" wasn't referring to that. Nothing sad about that at all).

No offense taken. As for the porn part -=let's not pretend the reason why we have high-speed internet is to read bike forums!

The porn is a semi joke.

lol. Sounds good.

We went to NO a few months back and had a blast (and a little too much to drink ). We decided to go to a gay bar since my wife had never been to one. As we walked in, one of the guys said "You don't have to be afraid." I turned to him and calmly said "I'm not." He laughed and said "No, I was talking to your wife" LOL Poor woman. Still she took it pretty well though, and we had a geat time (minus the hangovers each morning when we got up )

Sorry if I misread the porn joke

As as for high-speed, I always thought it was so we could outbid "Pez-boy" on eBay

Fuji History: This post is meant to provide a little insight into the Fuji brand. Way back in the mid 70's, Fuji was the first mainstream bike to use a 6-speed rear end. At the time, the bike industry was rather moribund and stuck in a rut. Fuji bikes became popular. Remember, that at that time, whether you were
a recreational cyclist or an enthusiast, for the most part, you bought a road bike cause' that's what was in the store. With the invention of the mountain bike, the whole market changed. Road bike sales declined. By the mid 80's Specialized, Trek, Cannondale and Univega grabbed significant market share and floor space in the independent bike dealer network. Some companies, Schwinn, Raleigh and Fuji among them were slow to react developing mountain bikes and never again reached the success they had in the 70's. For Fuji, to make matters worse, their bikes were made in Japan and as the yen got stronger, their bikes were less able to compete with frames made in Taiwan. To solve this problem, Fuji started selling their bikes mail-order and established a niche for road bikes for frequent users (guys who put on a lot of miles who may or not be racers). Although they were successful selling bikes mail-order, local bike shops for the most part stopped carrying the brand, because they couldn't compete on price. I remember going by the Fuji bike booth at the big dealer shows and noting how few bike dealers were looking at their product. At this point in time, it's still a niche brand. Fuji, the parent company is a huge conglomerate in Japan, owning much larger companies spread across heavy industry and electonics. So, although they have likely made very little money on their U.S. operations, they still make a fine product and know that in the future, the winds of change may blow again in their favor.

Poser comment: In Europe they tend to take the idea of equipment and apparel on the whole a lot less seriously. In Euro-land, there are lots of "Old men who get fat in the winter" (to paraphrase Patrick O'Grady) that wear the clothing of their favorite team and ride really nice bikes, although they generally ride at cruising speed. This does not mean they are trying to pass themselves as card carrying members of the peloton, it's just their way of expressing their enthusiasm for the sport of cycling whether as a spectator or participant. The dude who wears a Yankee baseball cap and pinstripe flannel shirt will never be mistaken for Derek Jeter but he enjoys the game and identifying himself with his favorite team. For the few, ever so serious cyclists whose zealotry doesn't permit space for others to enjoy the sport due to their narrow view of how others should look and act on a bike, I can only say that when you meet as I have, some of the top cyclists in the world, you will never encounter this elitist view among any one of them.

Um, Tom are you an elitist? How is this any different than fans who watch hockey, football or basketball and like to buy their jerseys or team apparel? Are they poseurs too?

That about sums up what it should be around here. But having said that i've only encountered one guy on a roadbike who was riding it seriously.

My FBS carries Fuji roadbikes and hybrids. They're very nice but underrated bikes. The same shop has just started carrying Scott's upper-end line of bikes too. I think they're the only dealer in the country to carry Scotts now. The Scott carbon fibre bike is a very nice bike although after taking a look at their other models which they market exclusively in Europe, I think they need to change their specs because those won't compete in the US market very well.

An elitist? I hope not....I think cycling is all about fun and how you do it whether it's riding a beach cruiser in surf trunks or the latest road bike fun wearing team apparel, fun is the bottom line. I think if you carefully read my post, what I'm trying to say is that I really don't care for the idea of trying to separate cyclists into "poseur" and "non-poseur' camps. I mean, where do you draw the line? If you don't race, does that make you a "poseur". The whole intent of the term "poseur" is meant to belittle an individual in a certain sense. And I don't ever want to do that. I'd like to see more folks cycling and having fun. What they ride and what they wear means very little to me, although when it's cold, I might think "Sheesh, how can he be riding without leg warmers!"

Ugh! I knew I should have had A/C installed in my house. The ambient air temperature in my house was 95 deg F. The only A/C we own is in our vehicles so we loaded our two kittens into my Jeep and went for a drive.

Here's an OAT reading.

Oh yeah... my computer system also decided to power itself down...

Code:
Jul 24 13:21:56 Espresso.NEEBU.Net sbus: [ID 702911 kern.warning] WARNING: Severe over-temperature condition detected!
Jul 24 13:21:56 Espresso.NEEBU.Net sbus: [ID 665200 kern.warning] WARNING: Powering down...
BTW, the threshold for danger-level shutdown of an UltraSPARC-II processor is a core temperature of 182 deg F.
