Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

... and yet I digress. Did I miss anything on today's ride? Or were you jumping over 5 scared little weeners at the BMX track today?

Nope, mowed the lawn and spent the day with the missus. You've got the BMX all wrong. Fearless little gravity defying weeners is more like it.

Cut their wheels out from under them as you scuttle along, inexorably attached to terra firma

Nope. Too terrified to take my hands off the grips. Ok, it wasn't that bad, but I was on a borrowed bike, in shorts and a short sleeve shirt with no real protection. The jumps are taller and steeper than when I was a kid, and the drops down the back are steep too. I'll pick it up quickly when my bike arrives, but I was a bit intimidated.

By the way, I don't wanna sound like a hero/wanker (I only raced for three years, a long time ago) but just remember that it REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hurts when you crash. I reckon we all forget how much it hurts.

I still get soreness in my shoulder from my last crash which was 2.5 years ago, and I didn't even break anything.
You should try mountainbiking.....or riding with Hitchy

Anytime soon (before the winter chill sets in, brrr). Paul should be up for a ride up to Newey/Newi/Newy as well I'd reckon. Coupla beers, train home?

Where's the track? Still behind the velodrome?

Speaking of winter chill, I need to get out to Calga sometime soon to familiarise myself with that bastard of a course before road racing season starts. I was thinking doing it one Saturday instead of Akuna Bay. Anyone keen on making a ride of it?

Neu-oui?

I've ordered a full face helmet, and I have the pants, jersey, gloves, etc. Just didn't have them Saturday.
Munchie, if you were asking about the BMX track, it's the Lake Mac one in Argy. I think I'll be ok without any cheering section for a long while.

Excellent. We promise not to cheer.

Climbo... 85km flat ride to argenton, watch Expat for forty seconds, then straight to Sulphide Workers for some amber, then stagger down the gravel verge to the train station to catch the all stations back to Gossy.

Once I actually start racing, it's every Saturday night. I think races start at 6. The season follows the school season.

Saturday Nights 6:00 till 8:30. Three gates of old codgers!! Now that's entertainment!

Mind you, we'll have to get Expat down one Sunday. Race then an easy tour to Terrigal via Chittaway and Bateau Bay for second breakfast maybe. only three little mounds to cover Expat, no sherpas required

The weekend before this past one there were 135 racers and 16 in the Masters. The "Old codgers" were all about your age, Munchie. Second brekkie? Is that because I'll lose the first? I need some proper slicks for the MTB before I attempt anything over 40k in distance, and I'll still be slow as a wet day.

The trip from Ourimbah to Terrigal is almost exactly 30km of mostly flat stuff. Second brekkie is because a simple bland bar after racing just isn't enough. The slow cruise is to ease out the pain and suffering in the legs.

As for being slow as a wet day, we'll borrow someone's floor pump and give those MTB tyres 140psi. You'll be flying (or floating)

I don't think there's too many MTB tires (even slicks) that will tolerate more than 80-85psi before really bad things happen.

Looks like it's time to take my Aussie Princess out for coffee. It's that day when we'll do special things together - coffee, shop for BMX bike, walk the dog on the beach, shop for BMX bike, romantic dinner at Italian restaurant...

Coasties, we might have to take in a few jumps at Terrigal ourselves and have an oldies BMX showdown !!

Too far.

The Cannondale is American made. My wife is 100% Aussie. The dog is continental toy spaniel. You mongrels are just jealous because I stole one of your wimmin. A good one too.

Stop it, I'm trying to work. The boss doesn't think it's appropriate for me to spend so much time on the floor holding my guts in.

Hey Rockmuncher,

I am from the Newcastle area and am interested to know a bit more about Kooragang races. I would be a complete beginner when it comes to racing so what kind of difficulty and distances are we looking at? Also do you know of any other social riding clubs around the Newcastle area at all?

Cheers

Dan.
