Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

yeah.

I had a Malvern Star Mosco 80, which was a hunk of junk. Did they actually make "proper" bikes after Sid Patterson retired?

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

I had a red Malvern Star as my first roadie circa 1986. Next cab of the rank was a Centurian Ironman - Tange steel, white with black splatters, Ultegra group......

hey speaking of Ultegra, I just replaced my 105 cluster & chain with ultegra and the LBS reckons that Shimano say not to put 39/53 Ultegra ring combo on because the jump is to large. Summint about "no pickup on Ultegra like there is on 105".

Anyone else heard of such nonsense?

Yeah. 40/53 or 39/52. Makes perfectly no sense to me.

I could understand it (maybe) if had a >25 on the cluster and the rear dereilleur was straining to give enuf slack to the chain. but really...

Maybe Shimano are talking about the front derailleur cage -- has it changed?

Says on the Shimano site that Ultegra comes in 53/39 or 52/39

Dunno. But my dereilleurs are 105. The other confusinating thing is my new bike is all Ultegra and comes out with 39/53 from the factory.

Maybe its only a problem if you mix Ultegra running gear with 105 dereilleurs

BTW, I was looking at the programme for the upcoming masters games in Adelaide and they mention a track event called the Derby. Any idea what its format is?

Gday climbo. I love that italian stuff, but hey the Jap crap seems to be just as sweet these days. They've even worked out how to keep prices artificially high so that converts don't feel like they're buying an inferior product

There was a song about it once. Apparently it never rains there... it pours, man, it pours.

I've also seen California referred to as Kali. Dunno why.

Have you tried my anit-puke technique, which is to do a couple of 95% efforts (after the "normal" warm up) before any 100% efforts?

As I've said before, I can't warm up at 60 to 80%, then go BANG into a 100% interval. That's puke city

Damn this end to day light savings, damn this infernal 9 hour day they require me in the office for, Damn this horrible 1 hour drive each way... hmm Basically weekends need to be longer so we can do all that we want to do

derby equates to some sort of keiren event, behind a motorbike and then a sprint finish.
