Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can grab air, just not lots of it! Six inches off the ground is a heady altitude for some of us

What weather conditions cause a stage to be reduced or cancelled?

If the weather is bad before the scheduled start, some directeurs and race officials will go out and reconoitre the course...esp. climbs, cobbled sections, descents etc. Ice on the road is a big no-no, as is heavy snow or the prospect of more snowfalls during the race. It's just too dangerous for the riders.

Often a decision to cancel will be made moments from the scheduled start time....like the 2004 Het Volk. Other times it can be made the day before if the situation is hopeless.

Bloody vets at Kooragang don't always. Rode for over an hour for a race on Sunday morning, past all the cones and signage already laid out for the race, only to be told "no race today" by the race committee! Bugger

It was a cold, wet, and windy ride home (into the wind, of course)

yes. I rode a dutch criterium that started in a downpour once...200 starters. Blokes were warming upon rolers behind the start with their girlfriend's holding umbrellas over them. 3 laps in I hit the deck cornering on a section of clinkers, foot went through a crowd control barrier and I loked like a **** trying to get it out, 1 mangled Dura-Ace lever.

Those Dutchies love the rain.......and mangling the 12 cog.

did you "pass the Dutchies on the left hand side"? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

If you're confused then think back to the 80's and a band called Kids in the Kitchen. [Edit] Actually they were called Musical Youth. Kids in the Kitchen were an Aussie band.

nice one....lol.

They are good for the sit though...every dutch bloke seems to be 6'2" plus and has no issue doing 1000 metre turns into a 40 knot headwind off the North Sea.....then Ed rolls through for a 150m turn before heading back down the string....he he!!

Yes Pete tries hard. It's a shame there are so many losers who are willing to hang him out to dry. He's actually getting stronger for it though, so maybe he'll be able to kiss them goodbye sometime soon...

That is a very ugly bike 531.

I kinda like the understated look of this one

Looks like 531 will have to trade his white boots in for some nice shine black and red numbers

No way....The Sonny Bill white boots would set those FSA wheels off nicely.
