Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I want to get a road bike because my mountain bike is giving me a saw back and is too hard to pedal. I think it’s hard to fit me a bike because my legs are larger than my upper body. The reason I get a saw back on my mountain bike is because I think the top tube on it is to long so I am reaching to the handle bars bending my back. What Road bike shoes will I need and pedals? And do you guys know what the best bike store is in Adelaide, Australia to get the best fitting bike for me.

Bikes: 8 bikes - one for each day of the week!

If you want a road bike, get a road bike. But you shouldn't get one just because your MTB doesn't fit you. A short stem and riser bar may correct the fit problem. When the boys log on tonight, they'll hook you up with a good shop.

Certainly true if you're riding it on the road.

This isn't meant to be a smart arse comment, but I've never heard of anyone switching from MTB to road bike due to back problems caused by poor fit. When the roadies finish tea, they'll log on and help you out.

Marty, sore back? too hard to pedal? How is it too hard to pedal exactly, this sounds quite strange, bikes are always hard to pedal up a hill for example. A road bike will not help this, what size is your MTB and what is your inseam and arm/torso length? Why not get a shorter stem on the MTB to bring your position back a little and more upright?

Uuuummm, I also did some road cycling related content in the class.
Great weekend !!

Saw 2 drunk Welshman draped in flags and red and green, walking (on the road part) of the Anzac bridge at 7am this morning after the 6 Nations win last night. Don't ask me how they ended up there, don't think they know either.

Then tonight I was talking to a Pommy kid on a bike in Erina who was a little off track, started a ride around Australia from Sydney today, he just came over from NZ.

No, but I think a few of the ADHD kiddies at my son's school have been using that instead of their medicine. You can imagine the effects

This isn't meant to be a smart arse comment, .....
Hhhhmmmm, not tying to be a smart arse, but isn't this an oxymoron coming from Expat?

Well lads, I found me a job!! got a phone call from a consulting firm a couple weeks back and before I knew it, they were making me an offer. Damned if I didn't actually start work this morning. Not actually sure whether I'm happy or not as having an income will be nice, but getting up to go to work kinda SUCKS!! (yes you're right, I'll NEVER be happy!)

I had a ride on the weekend (down to Sorrento) and at about the 60k mark I got the worst stomach ache ever. I actually pulled over at Rye and tried to puke but nothing came out. When I finally got to Sorrento, absolutely certain I was gunna die, my wife suggested that I should go to the loo for a 'number 2' (her words, not mine). Anyhow, I did this and low and behold took a massive dump and the guts felt fantastic afterwards. I never knew that bodily functions were so important when riding.

Hey Expat, what name do you auction you stuff on ebay under. Given that I will have a cash flow in the next month or so, it's time I started buying stuff again.

Gday marty. Your post is a little tricky to answer given that you have back pain. The best place to start would be to get properly fitted, especially if you think that your body is an unusual shape. Make sure you are provided with your measurements and calculated frame dimensions so that you can take them with you as you move from bike to bike.

As for you position on the mountain bike (AND any roadbike you purchase), there are a number of different elements that can be adjusted to relieve or even eliminate your back pain. These include saddle height, saddle position (fore/aft), saddle tilt (should normally be zero degrees), stem height, stem length, stem angle, handlebar width, and handlebar shape. All of these can be adjusted or changed to give you a better riding position. If you take your current bike along to your local bike store (LBS) they should be able to make you far more comfortable in a matter of minutes.

Especially if you tell them that you're going to buy a nice road-bike off them....

As for shoes, cleats, and pedals: it's your choice. You can use something compatible with your current bike if you want to be able to swap from one to the other with a minimum of fuss and expense. Or you can go for tried and trusted Look style cleats and pedals, and any cheaper road shoe. I use Shimano SH-R060 shoes for training because they're cheap, reasonably stiff, and not too heavy
