Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ah, we've all got those "flip-ups" in our past.

In 1996, my 1992 Ford Fairmont, after bank interest and modifications, ended up costing me $29,000.

It's now worth about $5000

I once blew $170 on a 2nd hand cricket bat from a pawn broker which busted straight away (it was replaced with a much cheaper one), so I looked to my mate for some conciliation.

I said: "have you ever blown 170 bucks?"

he replied: "are you farkin kidding? I blew $170,000 on a house and a wife!!"

You can now get sub-20lb XC race bikes. The extra weight isn't so bad when you factor in comfort and durability for the abuse they see off road.

Funny thing happened at the BMX track this morning. Went there for a few 7:30 AM training laps. Don't know if it was the intensity of my early morning efforts (highly unlikely) or the fact that my brain was not quite ready for the constant up and down motion as I rolled around the track, but I very nearly spewed my Domino's pizza dinner back up. Not a good start.

There are a lot of guys who take it easy on Saturday morning because they're racing on Sunday. It's a load of cods. The trouble is there don't seem to be any organised training rides locally (which is why I do the "house-of-pain" at Akuna Bay). I might start organising a couple of rides shortly.

As for this morning, well it was a very fine line between success and shame. I caught a few lucky breaks that allowed my solo to bear fruit, but only by the slimmest of margins. Less than 10m after 10km away by my reckoning, but I didn't really care what was happening behind me by the time I finished: I just wanted to cross the line so I could stop the suffering. The things we do.

ROFLMFAO: Dominos pizza, health food of a Nation. Well done Expat, what you experienced is call "effort". By the way, well done on becoming gainfully employed. Just remember that expensive silk ties and greasy lathe chucks don't mix.

"Effort"? Hmmph, have to go look that one up. Thank you. And for the record, I won't be wearing a tie to work. This is Australia, ok? And it's unlikely that a lathe chuck would be greasy. We always used a light cutting oil, not grease. But I will be in an office. Now to wrap it up all nicely, I'll point out that it was pepperoni pizza, so that would have left a greasy up-chuck.

From what I can gather, Munchie placed very well at breakfast time. I, on the other hand, was in a "Very bad place" this morning.

Don't know exactly, but steve wickham mentioned 35-45, 45+

What do they use at CD events? They would prolly use the same base age groups and aggregate groups if not enuf numbers

they used 35-44, 45-54 etc at CD track titles. There would probably be too many groups with not enough riders if they used 5 years categories.

What is it with Sunday crits? everyone too hung over? clash with church/religious beliefs? I would have thought that they would attract huge numbers, but have only average crowds showing.

too much racing if you ask me, every week? That's too much for a small club. Not everyone wants to race every week, or has the time.
