i just watched this years 'Paris-roubaix'.........I'm gunna stop whinging about some of the roads we have to race on around here!.......

road bike. I have my old veloce derailleur going unused so I'm trying to figure a way to use it so I don't have to buyt another one. And yes, I'd love to use it. Frame has been stripped but it'll be out getting fixed and paint for a few weeks. I'll let you know, thanks.

Right, because you have the support of a pro team, and unlimited bikes? Do you think those guys know how to change a tire?

actually, we were 'musing' about something like that on this mornings training ride. Just how good could you be, even us oldsters, if you had all the advantages of being a pro?. You know, don't have to worry about earning a living doing something other than cycling, unlimited bikes, unlimited time to train, dietitians, cooks, massuers etc etc......I reckon pro's are woosie-girls who wouldn't cope if they had to train & live like us mere mortals . ......mind you, i still wouldn't do that Roubaix thing!

I hate to bring it all back to BMX, but racing with the over 30 crowd, it's pretty damn "Real". Granted, you have to be pretty damn good to get the full sponsorship, but having all that at your disposal changes things. Kind of like the difference between gridiron players and footy players. In the US, the lowest paid guy on a pro team has no day job. Not quite like out here.

I reckon we need a race over here. You'd have to buy your bike locally, and you get no support. Get a flat? Fix it yourself, buddy! That would weed out the weak ones in the pack.

I'm not a happy pup tonite For reasons I can't explain I bonked in the Waratah Avanti Masters Classic today. We raced on the Eastern Crk Raceway, a lovely track which I enjoyed the last time out, I felt great, did a shortened training ride yesterday but today I just couldn't hack it for some reason. Got four laps in contested the prime (missed it) and a lap later I sat up. Only had ten minutes to go too.
I did get to spin to Emu Plains and back on the M4 with Eddie Salas after the racing so I have got a smile on my face....just

Couldn't race yesterday myself (first club handicap of the year), had baby duty. Went for a MTB ride this AM though. Found some new singletrack up at Kincumber mountain. I now know why I've seen a few downhill bikes trudging up there, some nasty stuff near the top. PShaw will be pleased.

I almost missed this post. Since I bought the headset press, the only headset I've need to replace was on the giant Cannondale one. Of course, the press doesn't work with the oversized cups. Go figure. I'll get some kind of adaptor, thereby insuring I never need to do another Cannondale again. In the meantime, you're welcome to use it. Munchie saw my "Ultimate" bike repair stand, and thought it was pretty sweet. I would have been embarassed if he saw the 3 tool kits. Road/vintage, MTB and BMX. The truth is out, I like to tinker as much as I like to ride.

tinkering takes lots of time, that's my only beef with it (having a kid and all) but it is good fun. First time I ever removed a headset was last week, pretty easy stuff. It does also take a ton of specialty tools which sucks, like cone spanners, you need to have them in each size and 2 of each is preferable, lots of $$. My next "tool kit" will be specially for the track with spare rings and sprockets, chains, very simple to manintain which is nice about track bikes.

Don't ask why but I also made my own power bars last night. Found some recipe for them, full of sugar, chocolate and wheat germ and other assorted stuff, they taste OK (not as good as Clif), a bit sweet for my liking but I now have about a full years supply in the freezer.

Our youngest kid is 12, so they're not so much of a problem, timewise. I'll have to send you guys some tools from the states by surface mail. When I enquired about Park tools out here, the basic rule of thumb was to multiply the US$ price by 4! Compared to paying a shop though, some stuff is definitely worth doing at home. By the way, I also have the Park headset remover tool. Makes such a quick job of popping out the cups.

I made some bars once too. Peanut butter is pretty good, but makes it hard to mix. We had a specialty food store that sold all kinds of soy protein and stuff like that. I'd mix all this stuff up, and create a nasty tasting Clif bar, at 3 times the price. That's back when they were 89 cents, so my foolishness didn't last long.

Life without the internet is a blissful thing. Managed to fit in a bucks show on Saturday. I was hammered by 4:00pm, and totally shattered by 8:00pm seeing as how I dun drink all that much anymore. I soldiered on until about 2:00am (6 hours past bedtime!) running on nothing but the vista of an endless stream of "Pamela's" wandering past my designating drinking post.

I'm sure they would complain in their normal loud manner, but I don't think they understood the play on words.

Eddy is one of Australia's better riders, 6 or 8 time Aus. champion, many 2nds and 3rds etc. 6th in the Olympics in '97 I think and still kicks serious butt in open 'A' grade today as a 39yo. He won 'A' grade on Sunday, won the Penrith pointscore earlier this year.............................
Eddy owns the bike shop at Rooty Hill near where I live. He and his dad Hector (a regular ride buddy), have been riding/racing most of their lives and have done heaps to promote racing in Oz. They are responsible for me taking up racing.

Better than nothing, that's for shizzle. I'd give my left nut to have "real" Eurosport on TV for my $100 a month, Mr Packer.
