Mt. Doom: Beyond the Limit
Watching the entertaining Discovery Channel reality TV series Everest: Beyond the Limit gave me a brainstorm (such as it is, this is BF). I'll offer Mt. Doom Velo Expeditions with the hope of getting some of you losers to the summit. Now to get to the top of Mt. Everest costs $40-$50K per person, plus airfare, plus a couple of months of your time. I'll give you the chance to summit Mt. Doom for only $2K per person, and I'll throw in a delicious post-ride feast at Wendy's. You can do it on a Sunday and be back home the same night.
There are no guarantees of course. Many Freds have met their fate on the slopes of the Col du Doom. But it's a personal challenge I'm more than willing to help some of you experience.

Does your expedition team include a translator for travellers from Canada? I heard you need a pretty drastic course of vaccinations and immune system boosters to safely travel to NY, do you have a doctor on staff? Do you provide transport for bodies back home, or are they just moved off to the side and left to the forces of nature?

You know, that is one piece of utter stupidity.
I can understand why mountaineers do it, they spend much of their lives climbing every mtn they can.
But as an exercise in macho tourism it's just plain dumb.
The basic rule of the upper middle class is that they have to differentiate themselves from the great unwashed masses. Sensibility and functionality
count for little in the face of this imperative.
If you want a real challenge, and one that makes sense in terms of who you are, become a Nut of Ventoux. far fewer can pull that off than can slog up Everest with
a 100 people doing the real work.

Rich,
Counseling is available....seriously. Why the anti-pcad rant day after day? Is there a history? Many of us find pcad amusing, and are unamused by your boorish interjections. You don't like the guy, so don't click. We'll all be happier and your blood pressure will be lower. It's a win-win. :-)

I dunno. I hear that about 3/4 the way up there are mummified remains laying out in the open, still clad in XL Primal Wear (you can still see the "Crankenstein" and "AC/DC" designs on the jerseys) and that there is such an accumulation of Zima bottles below the deck that Sherpas are being paid bounties to haul them back down to the bottom.

Newsflash: on Everest it's mostly tourists now. Very dangerous for all concerned. Half the clients on that TV show really had no friggin business being on an 8000 meter Himalaya peak. At least the guy running the expedition had the sense to send some of the more pathetic clients packing (refused to guide them to the summit lest he literally kill them).
