Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been a vegetarian for more than 30 years, always exercised like crazy, kept my weight down, etc. and wound up with colorectal cancer. So diet ain't everything.

That said, I like to think that if I'd kept up with the Marlboros and richinpeoria-style greasy fare, I probably would have expired a decade ago.

Hey pcad--it was a beautiful weekend here upstate--high 40s; low 50s and sunny. I logged 85 miles (which you probably do before breakfast on a crummy day), but it was a good couple of days for me.

Me Im a former Marlboro smoker of 28 years before I gave it up for this lunacy 25 years ago yet I liked my Ruths Cris or Ol Homestead 18 ounce steak, creamed spinach, oyster, cheese cake dinner once in awhile until they rushed me to the hospital last year thinking I had the big one. Turns out I ducked it but now thats out too .
There's no heart disease in my family and everybody eats whatever the F they want. They all have cholesterol of 280-450, don't medicate it and live to be 90-95 years old. On both sides. Go figure. I take 40 mg of Lipitor daily, which takes my cholesterol from 275 down to 190 or so. The lowest I ever got it by riding and diet was 230 or so. But again, there's no evidence this high cholesterol contributes to premature mortality or morbidity in my family over several generations. I take the Lipitor mainly to keep my doctor off my friggin case. Do doctors fully understand the relationship between cholesterol and heart disease? Obviously not.

It's all genetics. That's a far more powerful factor than diet. That being said I want to get skinnier, so F the Yodels. I can eat them after I quit racing. I'll never be a sprinter, but I ride so much better when I'm gaunt it's depressing. I don't want to be gaunt. I want to be normal.

Stupid friggin sport.

At 139 I looked pretty gaunt, add to that a shaved head and I was the butt of a lot of ribbing from my friends who kept telling me to eat a hamburger. They didn't like to ride with me though because I'd drop them 10 minutes into the ride.

For 50K, I expect a guided tour of OCC and lunch with Paul sr. thrown in.

I heard you could arrange it.

Ok then:

Breakfast: rice cake with peanut butter, a glass of orange juice

Lunch: Tablespoon of tuna salad on a 1" x 2" piece of whole grain toast, a glass of water

Dinner: Two tablespoons of penne a la vodka, 1 table spoon of broccoli rabe, a glass of wine

let me know how that works out, oh and you can squeeze a yodel in there once a week.

I don't think it would surprise anyone -- they all probably think you're a closet case anyway. Just let your hair and beard grow back the way you had it until recently, and you'll be ready to be featured in BentRider Online.

You already have a profession associated closely enough with engineering, the requisite paunch (though you might want to add a few lbs), and an interest in gizmos that most Road Nazis wouldn't be caught dead with but which 'bent riders will find cool like your bubble indicator. I might add a disproportionate number of 'bent riders strongly prefer Macs. You'll fit right in.

15 mph leisure rides suck. I agree.
