Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

RC Jack*$$

The past few times out on my normal 60 km ride I pass a house in the country with a guy, maybe 55 or so, playing around with pretty good sized gas RC cars.

Three times he waits for you to pass, then chases you down with this thing zig zagging all around you. Now, I am all for fun but this is a steep climb going and a high speed decent returning. This thing could cause damage to me and my bike.

I passed him today climbing and he literally does a couple of circles around me. I was thinking about going back but also know the outcome may not be good.

On the way back, I go by his place at about 60 km/h and sure enough this F'in thing goes tearing by about a foot to my left. I hit the brakes just as he turns it right and it ends up trapped under my front tire.

I wasn't too happy and really wanted to confront the moron but instead, reached down and picked the car up, tires spinning and the guy yelling and running towards me from a block away. He obviously wants his toy back unharmed.

I just clipped in, car in hand, rode a couple of km's and threw it into a local farms drainage pond. The guy was no longer in sight so I am sure he doesn't know where it is unless there is a gas slick on the pond.

Some freekin people!! I wonder what my next ride holds..

You may not have made the most noble of decisions, but the guy had it coming.

I would like to think I would have bunny-hopped onto the guy's car before it ever got this far.

Definitely not the high road, but I can't blame you. He deserved it. Unfortunate that you probably got a lot of gas/oil in that pond though.

Hopefully he doesn't try to kill you with another car next time, or a gun.

Funny, and I'd have probably done the same thing. I'd probably stay away from there for a while.

I'm thinking there is a RC forum somewhere with an equal and opposite story. I fly RC planes, and it's an understatement to say that I'm always careful to avoid people. What that guy did is insane. You probably should have called the cops and let them sort out the fate of the car. After defending yourself from it by disabling it, of course.

The guy completely deserved it. What he was doing was dangerous and stupid. Also confronting the person probably would have made matters worse. I think I would have done the same thing.

bad rc pilot about 25 seconds in.

im an rc guy. we arent all @ssclowns. like people, motorists, cyclists in general and ones on BF, there are guys who need a good beatdown, but most of them are ok.

reckon that was about $500 in the pond. he deserved a good punch in the head, as behavior like that makes all of us, rc guys, look bad.

^ Agreed. I used to be into RC cars, and wanted to try planes. I would have never thought to harass someone with my car, or even go close to anyone not with me.

yeah, don't ride there any more if you can avoid it. Those things are expensive and I'm sure he's pissed. UK, from what I've seen that's a tough bunny hop (and probably a rougher landing). Do that well and you should race cx w/o unclipping.

Admittedly, I thought this was going to be a "what should I do next time" thread, and was very, very amused to hear it ended up in a pond. Not doing yourself any favors, but holy hell, he had it coming.

as expensive as the good stuff is these days and as often as i crash on my own, i dont need to be putting my gear in harms way.

that and with planes, while im all electric, 2lbs traveling between 40-85mph, is going to do more than tickle. 150+mph isnt uncommon with the flying wings, but im thankfully a warbird guy.

Well, from the OP's story, I figured there would have been many opportunities to practice (or maybe the guy would stop doing it out of fear of wrecking his car). However, the more I think of it, the more I can imagine the car catching my wheel and making me wash out. Not worth it.

I would love to try cx some day, though.

ouch. watch out for the cops. destruction of private property. you didn't even file a police report, so you have no evidence to support your claims of harassment. tough luck.
guy sounds like he had it coming, but you are going to get the short end of this stick. : /

What's the other guy gonna say though? I was driving my RC car on a public road (illegal) and it got in the way of this cyclist (illegal) and he stole it?

I wouldn't count on it.

It would have been interesting to take the car to the local police station and leave it there along with a complaint. I might have even let the "gentleman" know that he could pick it up there at his leisure. The pond was a nice touch though.

Yeah, not one of my prouder moments and I didn't do much to foster cycling goodwill or good environmental practices but d*mn, he had it coming. I was on my cx bike too! Should have tried the bunny hop, or not.

I think I will avoid that road for a bit.

Claiming it as a trophy might have been more fun.

Then paint it, and return it to that house with a fun paint job.

To quote Bart - "Mashy Smashy". Tell the person to go play elsewhere. As to cx, it is the go anywhere bike. Fun!
