Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Identify these speedplays

Gotta a Scott Tri-Bike and it came from someone who didn't know what a crankset or what Mavics are, well the bike came with speedplays but i have no idea which ones? The reason I ask is I need cleats for them.

here is a picture!

The X/2s are stainless and silver in color (spindle). I have those on my Litespeed. The X/3s are Chromoly and are usaully have a black spindle like the one in the picture above. I love the float on these things.

Those are them. They work with all X pedals in the series.

X-series cleats are the ones you are looking for; X/3 just means it has a chromoly spindle rather than stainless steel (X/2) or titanium (X/1).

Wow...you got the bike back in January of 2008 and are just now getting around to posting a picture and finding cleats?

X-3s. Make sure you inject some fresh grease into the port (remove screw) in the end of the pedal.

Given the amount of corrosion on that crankarm, I'd also *ahem* disinfect the bike, and then take everything apart and lubricate it.

I don't know how you can tell. The pic is horrible! And besides, they look just like my Speedplay LA's and the cleats don't mix with the X's. Best bet is to go to an LBS that handles speedplay.

And BTW, I love 'em.

I was just giving you a hard time, but I have found the following to be the best for chromo Speedplays - I brush them on a wire wheel on my bench grinder and then seal them with automotive clearcoat from a touchup bottle. do it in about 4-5 coats and the surface will be hard enough to help prevent it from scratching as easily.

To lube just remove the screw from the end of the spindle (outside of the pedal body). Get one of those small syringes that almost anyone with a baby will have from dosing oral medication, and fill it with grease. Stick it in the end and push hard against it as you rotate the pedal body. Stop when all the grease coming out the other side of the pedal body is "clean".

Guys, they are X5's. (chrome moly spindle) There is no such thing as an X3.

It goes X/1 (Ti spindle) X/2 (stainless steel spindle) X/5 chrome moly spindle.)

I agree completely. They sure look like my LAs but it's not a great pic.

Actually...I think they're X-rays....the new Sapim Speedplay.

.....good catch BTW - I blame my intense illness for the oversight.

Here's the rub. The pic is poor so it's difficult to see the pedal platform. They appear to be grey, not black and they are definatly chome moly (black and rusting) spindles. They are clearly not this year's models as the X/5 has a blue pedal platform. They may have had different color combos in the past.

It appears the real key to the model (Zero. LA, or X) has to do with the dimples (or lack there of) on the pedal surface. If the pedals DO NOT have any dimples or other contour on the pedal surface (that is, they are flat) then they indeed are X/5s, so near as I can tell. If there are 4 small oval dimples on the pedal surface, the are probably LAs, and you best go to the Speedplay website and look closely at the Zeros.

Good luck.

They are grey and have a dimple on one side and a screw on the other.

Bikes: n, I would like n+1

The dimples they are referring to are different than the screw hole you are showing. Those are X series, not Zero series pedals. For a set of things as mechanically simple as their pedals, the folks at Speedplay sure do a good job of preventing them from being compatible with each other (zeros and LA for example). Also, being a tri-bike the comment about disinfecting may not have had anything to do with making the outside of the bike look pretty. When it comes to longer races there aren't usually organized breaks in tri's the way there are in many road races.

Also note the bowtie bolts are hex instead of torx - meaning these pedals are fairly old.

Well, now that we've solved that mystery, what's next? World Peace? UFO? National Debt?
