Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Of course for casual rec riders a triple can make sense... I have no problem with someone wanting a triple if they so desire, but I do object when people try to pass them off as necessarily better than a double, standard or cmpact.
Well I suppose I could have worded it better/different. I was trying to get a point across to him as things were getting a little out of focus. I should have said wanna be's, posuer, I hadnt really concidered an amature race cyclist as a racer type. To my brain anyone who buys the licence and competes with others is a profesional, but I will have to amend that mind set. I will conceed the point, I stand corrected. I will however never like a compact crankset, I feel that they are a poor compromise in gearing. But that is my own issue I suppose.

So what do you say? *****exual? You could be spot on, as I have yet to find someone offended by that word... unless they were not one.

Also, in case anyone is wondering, it's sexual orientation and not sexual preference, as the latter implies that they had a choice in the matter. Isn't being PC fun?

Yeah, I could see alternative being offensive to some people. It implies it's not normal, weird, etc.

Sorry

Jeebus, this has gone right off the rails. Anyway, would it be ageist to infer that triple users are most often grey?

Personally -- as a proud grey person -- I find a triple (30-40-50) most useful for my pursuit -- marathon cycling in mountainous territory -- and agree with the poster above who pointed out it's the best way to keep spacing close over the widest range, e.g. 10 tooth jump, rather than 16 I explain my reasoning here.

And you may note on that page that the father of road racing himself was quite intolerant of the "fairer sex" and other lesser mortals:

The [single] gear ratio was something we did not choose lightly, but once chosen, we did not change it .... Soon they will show us gearing that corresponds to every slope and to every state of mind. There will be gears for young girls, for brides, for family men, for skinny and fat people, for sluggish people and for drug addicts.” ~Henri Desgrange, L'Auto-Vélo, 1902

Please get with the program. We are all African-Americans, at least those of us from the US.

The rest of you don't count, or something.

You may be from a ape, but I'm not even though we all came out of northern Africa.

How is Alternative offensive? This is what I've heard the gay community calling it themselves!!! I, a straight person, find alternative offensive because it makes something that is wrong to be acceptable behavior. What if I was into beastiality and explained it as just an alternative lifestyle thus it should be accepted? You scorn me now for mentioning beastiality but you would have scorned me 40 years ago if I had mentioned *****exuality. Makes one wonder what lewd lifestyles we'll be embracing 40 years from now. By the way the new education czar Kevin Jennings appointed by Obama has issues. Mr. Jennings gave a talk to the Iowa chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, an advocacy group that promotes *****exuality in schools. On the tape, Mr. Jennings recollected that he told the student to make sure "to use a condom" when he was with the older man. That he actively encouraged the relationship is reinforced by Mr. Jennings' own description in his 1994 book, "One Teacher in 10." In that account, the teacher boasts how he allayed the student's concerns about the relationship to such a degree that the 15-year-old "left my office with a smile on his face that I would see every time I saw him on the campus for the next two years, until he graduated." So is that where we're headed in 40 years? trying to legalize sex with kids? Perhaps, California has had 6 attempts to pass bills legalizing sex with minors and adults thanks to N*A*M*B*L*A, so far they failed. This is N*A*M*B*L*A's definition from their site: "What Is Man/Boy Love? To explain man/boy love today, one must first explain what it is not: It is not what you view on television or read in newspapers. It’s not what you hear on Oprah or Geraldo, nor is it the propaganda put out by police and politicians. It’s the love of a man for a boy, and of a boy for a man. Enjoyable, consensual, beautiful." Of course none of this probably makes anyone sick.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...isky-sex-czar/

And for those you that hate me for bringing this up you can join N*A*M*B*L*A* here: https://www.******.org/ You have to fill in the word without the *'s since this was all edited by the forum.

I bet you I caused a fire storm.

I got tired of reading this thread around the post of the 28% SF hills.........

Lets dump the original topic and post some photos of steep hills with a bike on it (double or triple, who cares). I wish I had a 28% hill near me.

Actually, I was just joking about that.

As for the rest of your post, that's exactly what I say when I play devil's advocate for discussions and debates. Personally, I don't mind any "alternative" as long as it doesn't include a victim. In other words, if you want to participate in beastiality, go right ahead. Just make darn sure the animal is consenting. Of course, I agree that a child can not give consent since s/he probably does not know the full extent of his/her actions, and the same might apply for some animals. Other than that, live and let live. My life has yet to be damaged by a person being gay. If it's immoral (just like shaving and eating shrimp if you go by Leviticus), God will sort it all out in the afterlife.

With Double Century season beginning shortly I'm thinking of putting the triple back on the Jamis Eclipse. The 42t ring is so handy for rollers and other changing grades where one would be constantly shifting between the 50 and 34.
