If you get dropped from a TTT in a grand tour, are you forced to drop out of the tour? Or do you just get a different time than the rest of the team?

heckler 05-12-10 08:08 PM

google offered this but it is fron the 05 tour de france:

The teams' times are taken on the fifth rider to finish, and all riders finishing together with their team are credited with that time. Riders who are dropped will be given their actual time, and there is a time limit of the winning team's time +25% to avoid elimination, which could be a tough call for a rider who gets dropped early; the rest of this spiel only affects the individual GC for riders who finish with their teams.
The maximum amount of time that a rider who finishes with their team can lose to the riders on the winning team is determined by the placing of their team: riders in the team that finishes second can lose no more than 20 seconds, 3rd - 30 seconds, 4th - 40 seconds and so on in ten second increments down to the 15th team, who can lose no more than 2.30, and then in five second increments down to the 21st team whose riders can lose no more than 3 minutes. If the team finishes closer to the winners than the maximum, the riders get the actual team time. Still with me? Good.
The actual team times are used for the overall team classification.

I know the 5 man rule is for everything I have seens, the percents off and whatnot may change race to race (mainly depending on the course (25% is reasonable for a 25km course but may be difficult for a 40km...just my thought)

Alright, that cleared it up. I wonder how many riders who get dropped still make the time cut. But I guess 25% is a pretty decent gap.

heckler 05-12-10 08:13 PM

oh crap that was specific not for the giro nvm

heckler 05-12-10 08:14 PM

for the maximum time lost part I mean. I remember people complaining about that after the fact and I believe it went away

Post concussion syndrome + post wisdom tooth extraction pain = not such a fun week for Uncle Pcad.

Not riding this week either.

My guess is the layoff will be good for me in a number of ways.

Giro helmets have now saved my noggin on three occasions, possibly my life. While any good helmet might have done the same, I'm partial to Giro for a number or reasons, some of which are now bordering on velo superstition. The other main reason is they look and fit better than other helmets I've tried. Ordered a new Giro yesterday.

the 230$ one?

I crashed an Livestrong one , I wont buy another. But i have a new Giro now.

$160 plus shipping ($10) for a new Giro Ionos (magenta/black like the one it replaces) in large. Hard color combo to find, it is discontinued. I like it. Matches the team kit.

heckler 05-12-10 09:32 PM

I bought a 40 buck bell solar to match my new bike colors...someday I may pay more but not now.

my new one was $60 , but if i get a new job i might get a new Ionos

I think it's rather obvious my head is worth at least 2.5x more than yours Razor.

I just picked the Giro that fit the best at the LBS. Didn't take down the name, but it was $60. When I get as fast as Pcad, I'll invest in the fancy helmet.

You're probably faster than me right now. And if you're not, give up the sport.

A helmet saved my life when I crashed because I severely doubt my head would have been ok after colliding against a tree at a significant rate of speed. I used to be resistant to wearing one because I thought I would be fine without one, now I don't get on a bike without one.

patentcad 05-12-10 09:50 PM

We have a couple of Road Nazis who insist on doing the local training ride on Saturdays (which is often quite the race pace hammerfest) sans helmet. I think they're insane. I wear bicycle and motorcycle helmets daily. The bicycle helmet is so light that I've ridden for an hour before I realized I accidentally left it home. Feels the same with the helmet on as it does when you're not wearing one at all, that's how light they are. With a motorcycle helmet, it's like you have a refrigerator on your head. But I don't ride my ST without my Nolan helmet either.

I only have one brain (such as it is) and I need it, even for BF.

It will allow you to come to terms with looking up to me on the mileage leader board

Hey Pcad,

What gear do you climb hills in?

39 x 21, 23, 25, depending on the grade. Unless it's a BF Pissing Contest, then it's the 53 x 11. We have at least one hill around here that really requires a 39 x 27 or lighter gear (Cain Road, average gradient 15%+ for nearly a mile, 20%+ extended sections). I get up Mt. Doom (several 100 meter+ 15-18% sections) in the 39 x 25, or maybe the 39 x 23 when I'm feeling spunky. When I'm really jamming up Mt. Doom for time I actualy have do most of it in the 21.

I didn't need a 25 down in Bergen/Rockland counties where I used to live and train. Up here there are too many hills and grinding steep grades all over the place.
