My RHR is about 50.

patentcad 06-11-10 05:38 PM

You want to lower your RHR and get fitter? This is what works for me:

• Weight loss. Lowers my RHR. My RHR won't get down near 40 or less until I'm fairly lean.

• 'Bullets'. Those are short intervals. 1 minute intervals at 300-400 watts (you try to keep the PM @ 400 but that's tough) with 1 minute rest periods, go again immediately, repeat 5x, do 2-3 sets of those. Then I do 3-4 minute hard intervals all the way home. It's the short, HARD intervals that most closely approach what you need in racing. If you can't respond to a 1-4 minute surge, you're gone. Longer intervals are necessary of course, but it's the shorter ones that give you the basic ability to hang on.

I've been doing the shorter intervals the past couple of weeks. It works. Always has in the past too. I can go from out-the-back-door to hang with the pack fitness in a couple of weeks with those workouts.

My HR is recovering from 170 to <130 in about 30 seconds much of the time, that's another sign my fitness is coming around.

Pretty much exactly what the evil road nazi's are advising... wait a minute, are you a road nazi?

If I posted this in the 33 I would be roasted alive. I post it here as a Fred Community Service.

I don't have a deck because I live within 1 hour of civilization and can't afford a $2million house :(.

I live 45 miles from the GW Bridge. You know, NY City?

• With the Miracle of 21st Century Technology, we can now travel 45 miles in under an hour.

• NY City is widely considered 'civilization', but many will argue this point.

patentcad 06-11-10 06:21 PM

I'm racing in the NYC tomorrow @ 6:30AM. And not Manhattan. Brooklyn.

Other than driving around once a year or so, I have no idea what NYC traffic is like. But if it's anything like DC, a 45 mile distance would be about a 2hour commute each way.

I guess people that work from home get a pass, because they don't have to slave away in rush hour like the rest of us suckers, so living 45 miles away isn't as big of a deal.

I was out of milk, bananas, and most food in general so I just ran to Harris Teeter. I rode my mountain bike, on the sidewalk, as I was too deprived of everything to go in the road. After I got milk, bananas, and a big ass sandwich, I headed home. Cop yelled at me for riding on the sidewalk. "Normally I would be okay with that, but I lack the energy to get out of the way of a car, much less keep up with traffic. I have a bag full of food, and it would be much more of a hassle should I get hit by a car than if I ride on the sidewalk" He let me ride on the sidewalk. :thumb:

I occasionally have to brave rush hour traffic. Like on Monday I'm doing that. 10AM meeting in midtown. Taking the motorcycle, I'll roll out of here @ 7:45AM. But most of my trips to the city are for client meetings later in the day or to race my bike at 6:30AM on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I can make Central Park in about an hour for those Manhattan races.

Actually it's rather amazing to me that a place as bucolic as Chester isn't farther away from the largest city in North America. I was just thinking today how much I enjoy living here. It's very beautiful, but it's close enough that I have contact with the city racing and cycling scene and of course, NYC itself. I do have half a dozen neighbors who work in NY City, two are executives, three are union construction guys (who may earn more $ than the executives).

Hey Pcad, I'm going up the NYC and just might race one of the Prospect Park races should there be one on the weekend we're up. We have annual passes to the New York Athletic Club, on Central Park S. which is cool.

Who has nothing to prove and thus is not racing tomorrow?

Bedtime for Uncle Pcad.

You will all have to muddle through the rest of the evening sans my Sage Pcad Velo Wisdom. Try to stay out of trouble, especially you kids.

A union bus driver here just got his job back after being fired. He was fired because while driving his bus route, he put it in park, exited the bus, and punched an off-duty cop who was talking to kids while dressed as McGruff the Crime Dog. He got back in the bus and drove off, only to be picked up a few blocks later. He got his job back because no charges were filed. I have no problem with unions in general, but shesh.
