So when was the last time you were in Brooklyn?
BTW, Brooklyn happens to be the most populous borough in the most populous city in the US; what are these "ladies" you speak of? |
One time in band camp I had to ride my bike through the tough section on my way to the flutist competition. Those tuba players are all so tough...it was scary...

Not having an iPhone sucks. I put it up on eBay to fund a new iPhone4 so I had to use this archaic technology called a radio alarm clock and obviously set it wrong. The damn thing doesn't even have a touch screen! Anyway, I missed the the start of my ride which I had been looking forward to the whole week. Tried to chase them down, but with a 15 minute gap and not having razor like time trial abilities it just wasn't possible. Wanted to finally mix it up with the A group but now that won't be happening for a couple of weeks. On the bright side, I'm going to NC for a week on Tuesday. Time to see what the big deal with elevation changes on a bike.

Shelled like a cheap pistachio. I can't remember the last time I did a race that fast. Every time I looked down we were going 28-30 mph. 22-23 mph up the hill. Ouch. Couldn't recover. The scary part is that as I'm peeling off the back my team mate Bernie was off the front with a 12 man break, pulling those idiots around non-stop. I don't know how he finished in that race, but they should all just have ceded the win to him since he was absolutely dragging them around for 5 laps. That guy is amazing. In terms of sheer aerobic mojo he is one of the strongest 35+ guys in NY that I can think of. I am confident the breakaway stuck, they had a 45 second gap with two to go.

If you're doing a "century" tomorrow, why do you need to "train" for 106 miles in a month?

There's something innately funny about people tough-talking on an internet forum. It's even funnier when it's a cycling forum.

I think your bike is actually a male. You're probably making him angry by continuing to refer to him as a chick.

so that means the only people who would choose 106 are going to be serious cyclists.
I'd say that organized rides are easier than solo rides, though frankly I've never done a solo century. Food, support, and other cyclists to chase down and keep you motivated. Every century I've done has a contingent of recumbents, mountain bikes, Y-bikes, and other Fredmobiles. So you've got to be pretty slow to be in the back. |

• 'Bullets'. Those are short intervals. 1 minute intervals at 300-400 watts (you try to keep the PM @ 400 but that's tough) with 1 minute rest periods, go again immediately, repeat 5x, do 2-3 sets of those. Then I do 3-4 minute hard intervals all the way home. It's the short, HARD intervals that most closely approach what you need in racing. If you can't respond to a 1-4 minute surge, you're gone. Longer intervals are necessary of course, but it's the shorter ones that give you the basic ability to hang on.
I'm not very good at keeping the power up on the downhill bits and most of the local rides are rolling terrain. I think I'll go suffer in the basement. |
I was so excited to go watch the Clarendon cup today, which I've been planning for for months, and then my boss called and I had to work. The one day of the year I really wanted off. What the hell.
I just got a call from my uncle. He has VIP passes for today and tomorrow! Guess who works tomorrow? I do! There is no way to explain how pissed off I am right now. |

So you've got to be pretty slow to be in the back. i've only done one organized century and I was in the slow group. We finished in 5 hours 30 minutes as the slow group and nobody on recumbents, y-bikes, or mountain bikes attempted the century, just the shorter rides. Of the 800or so registered riders, only about 100 signed up for the full century and most backed out when they hit the strong head winds. the rest did the 62 and 25 mile ride. If you're used to riding a century at your own pace, it might catch you off guard when the group decides to keep going when you feel like you need a break. |
I kinda just assumed everyone does A rides all the time if they are on bf...then I come here and it is a breath of fresh air.

Given today's best thread about assaultting chidren on rides, I'm curious how far you would go to get back at someone who passes you. How do you contain the rage?
