Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

pcad can actually string together a 10k foot 100 mile ride. I used to do it when I lived in that area, it uses 5 'major' climbs: storm king, bear mt, willow grove road (aka gate hill), greenwood lake, and mount peter. Along the way there are also several .5-1 mile grinders that kick the total up to 10k. I haven't done that loop in probably 15 years, but I rode it pretty regularly way back when.

In all fairness, your soccer comment was ignorant.

I just ate a nectarine that wasn't ripe.

Actually, that looks like a young Gomer.

I'll grant his point that a U.S. soccer should be more competitive and defeat countries like Ghana.

But his suggestion that soccer is on par with other youth sports is wrong. There's plenty of kid's soccer leagues. But by the time you reach high school, all the focus is on basketball, football, baseball, or the other second-tier sports. Those are the sports where all the pro money is, and, unsurprisingly, those are the sports that all the good athletes gravitate towards.

Did you see that U.S. soccer team in action? The players couldn't even pass back and forth very well. I say it's largely because the great American athletes are working on passing a real football.

Is mount peter the climb to pcad's house?

gstein are you coming down to south jersey for the crits on the 3rd and the 4th? I have seen you had done them in years past.

No, Mt. Peter is a larger 600+ foot vertical hill south of here.

I may actually have to give that route a whirl. The only climb I don't know is Storm King, unless you mean climbing it over Rt. 9W, or is there some back road that's better?

Is losing 4-1 in soccer considered to be embarrassing?

Today was typical up here. I wasn't looking for climbs, just a 60 mile relatively flat route with the rolling hills around here. That resulted in 3500' of vertical, the biggest single climb was the 400' slog up Mt. Doom at the end. So if you really go out looking for every climb on a 100 mile loop around here, 10,000' of vertical should be doable. I routinely do 4000' on 50 mile rides that are mostly just rolling terrain.

It will be interesting when I go to Greece logging my vertical feet there. Those are longer 6+ mile, 2000 vertical foot climbs over the main ridge that runs up the spine of the island. I go up and over that ridge each day, both ways, and then sometimes do some additional climbing. Looking forward to it.

My house is full of teenage girls (my daughter's latest sleepover pals). The Teen Drama is rather amazing.

Speaking of climbs, yesterday I did that bugger of an ascent on Butterfly Gap Road up Chilhowee Mountain.

Visualize four Mount Dooms in a row.

What a day. I'm never watching England play another game ever again. Fing dumb spineless babies.

If I hadn't managed to remove that giant wax ball from my left ear, this would have been a wasted day.

Is this what it's like to be a Mets fan?

That is so friggin gross. But not as gross as this one scene in 'The Road', the Viggo M. movie we watched on Pay Per View last night.

when you watch a game like that, you really need to get hammered. As the designated driver, i watched all the gory horrors stone cold sober whilst my mates got more and more sloshed to numb the senses.

At least Argentina/mexico is on now. A decent game for sure.
