Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

you don't think someone who knows nothing about bikes dedicates less time to cycling than someone who knows a lot about bikes? i didn't say i know your priorities, just that you spend more time on cycling than someone who knows next to nothing. someone who spends hardly any time on cycling obviously puts cycling way lower in his list of priorities than a serious cyclist.

"important things" = superior to anything bike related. Hmm.

I don't get your point. But in the grand scheme of things, the vast majority of people do not think cycling is all that important. In fact they think cyclists are a positive nuisance.

I was just thinking out loud, trying out that thought.

Is there really anything more important than cycling?

Well you should probably spend a moment or two longer reading your own posts. Saying that some newbie "has the important things as their priorities" would assume that another party has less important things as their priorities, and that you know what both of those are.

it could be ambiguous, i grant you, but what I intended to convey was that the newbie has other things that they prioritise that to them are the important things. To a dedicated cyclist who happens to play golf on occasion, the cycling is more important than a non-dedicated cyclist who plays golf more and cycles once in a while. Just difference in priority given to cycling.

For example, Herbie calls himself a cycling sailor or something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew far more about sailing and to him sailing was the important thing in his priorities.

What if Herbie just likes the sailor's outfit?

Precise language is not a hallmark of internet forum posts.

Neither is the acceptance of newbies or the endless rehashing of old topics.
