Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Drivers in DC metro area are nucking futs.

Well, you're probably still recovering from your epic run to the seashore. By the way, how did the Ti feel on that ride?

But the body is only ~25% efficient, so it's back up to the 110 kcal range. kJ on the powermeter are basically the same as kcal burned, give or take depending on your own personal efficiency.

I don't find them to be too bad. Arlington is definitely the worst. But that's because of the roads, not the drivers. Lots more quiet side roads in DC proper and Montgomery County, while Arlington has tons of wide open roads that people fly through. Lots of culdesacs, so less interconnecting roads, which means wider and faster.

Not when it comes from a human. We are roughly 24% efficient. Therefore, you burn ~348 kJ in heat during the production of 110kJ, on top of the 110kJ. So, you actually burn 109.5 kCal when your power meter shows 110kJ.

You can add about 3% to that if it's a PowerTap.

FWIW, I can burn 51 Calories in a minute.

Once.

The ride felt very good but there were a few problems unrelated to the bike. Previously i had done a century with not one ache or pain so i know it is set up just right. But yesterday I was carrying a backpack which was quite heavy with food and water and shoes and clothes. I had terrible back ache in the last couple of hours. The seat seems to have broken down eventually. There are uneven ridges and bumps and these dug into my bums. the backpack straps dug into my shoulders.

nice.

At least they didn't finish the job. I would say you should get out and ride in the more rural areas, but that just changes the type of vehicle to pickup truck and adds the fun of having beer bottles tossed at you.

Just some bike damage (Uh oh, it clicks) - destroyed the brand new seat on its first ride, bar tape, shift levers scratched. I scraped the car I hit but was too freaked out to do anything about it.

That was fun.

My helmet did it's job, but it is just scraped not smashed. I'm not sure if I should go to the hospital. I feel fine and rode home anyway.
so did the car that caused the crash not stop? what an ahole.

Can you tone it down a bit? That post was a little too knowledgeable for this thread.

Sorry to hear about the crash. At least you didn't get squashed.

It is a disgusting display of modern humanity to see some kid eat shlit on a bike and not stop to help. We're progressing as a society.

On a side note, if one was to exercise total caution, it would be prudent not to discuss certain things on public forums.

Facebook and other social media outlets have been a goldmine for low-life lawyers.

And then you expire?

Hey, too bad you can't keep that going, that's like 3,000 calories per hour.

That being said, stay the eff out of this thread, there's no place for your annoying fact-based 33 knowledge here.

That would be a bigger problem if there was a KK closer to work or home. 250 calories... I might have to pace myself a bit there. Maybe two hill repeats?

Well, a 1' test fries me for a couple days. I can still ride and train, but nothing impressive.

Yeah, I'll leave now though. It's only a matter of time before the next wave of posts comes through to sap everyone's IQ.

do people in the 41 use gels? I had a few as freebie give-aways and i used them on saturday's ride and holy smokes! they are the fastest acting stuff I have eaten ever. I was barely able to turn the pedals and not far from bonking despite eating what I considered was adequate. I squeezed one lucozade gel into my throat and swallowed; I had run out of water so i tried to not let is stay in the mouth being so sweet and sticky. I was back to pedalling hard in 5 mins.
