You're trying to impress us cyclists that you have more arm strength than us?

Ha.

coasting 08-02-10 08:19 AM

It's like he is new here. Arm muscle? We're all trying to lose it.

cshell 08-02-10 08:41 AM

It doesn't take much effort for me.

mzeffex 08-02-10 09:33 AM

I was just walking around with my jersey still on and the c02 in my back pocket. I slipped on the stairs, landed on it, and it 'sploded. Then my back was freezing.

The cycling injuries some people sustain . . .

Is it possible to "jam" your front dérailleur?

All I did yesterday was tighten and loosen the bolt that holds the cable. And yet now it seems like it is stuck in the small ring position and doesn't want to shift.

Adjust the limit screws.

ok velo. follow these steps (assuming you have not moved the FD mounted position at all)

1) release the cable again. This will cause the FD to fall to the small ring.
2) Push the small lever of the shifter many times. This ensures it is at the small chainring position.
3)pull the slack out of the cable as it goes down the downtube and around the cable guide. make sure it is nice and tight all the way round and up to the bolt.
4) pull the cable up round the bolt, making sure the washer is between the wire and the bolt.

Velo Vol 08-02-10 10:10 AM

It is in the small ring position--the problem is that it doesn't seem to want to move.

When I was tightening/loosening the bolt before, the whole thing would pivot back and forth. Now it seems like it's locked in position.

I don't want to put too much force on it for fear that I'll break something.

so you can't push the lever? or do you mean you can push the lever but the fd doesn't respond?

if it is the former, i would think you had the lever pushed to the big ring position before you attached the cable, hence the lever wont move further

Velo Gator 08-02-10 10:31 AM

Good morning people.

The lever doesn't want to push when it's cabled to the dérailleur. Like I said, it seems like the whole thing doesn't want to move, apart from the shifter. Shouldn't you be able to pivot the whole mechanism by wiggling where the pinch bolt is? Right now mine stays fixed.

How can you be bored in the midst of Velo Vol's mechanical crisis?

My chain is stuck in the small ring, too, but it doesn't have anything to do with the hardware!

Hey coasting,

Maybe if you enroll here they can teach you how to do a 20 mile ride without getting exhausted.

ok...forget diagnosing what made the current problem occur. detatch it and d it again according to the steps above. that way it should be in the right starting position.

yes you can. if you just pull on the wire and ignore the shifter, just pull on the wire under the downtube, the fd should pivot. if not maybe you have tightened the limit screws too much but i don't think so since you said you didn't touch them.

i say reattach and start again.

oh man. they are the organisers of that night ride.

Herbie53 08-02-10 10:54 AM

Maybe you're just destined to ride on the small ring.

couldnt figure out how to put brake pads on?

I swapped out the brake pads and cleaned and adjusted the calipers on the S2 last night. 10 minutes total.

Cleaning the drivetrains on three bikes took 90 minutes, and that job SUCKS. But rewarding. Rode the Ibis Ti Road this AM and no more clicky clack. Silent.

Herbie53 08-02-10 10:57 AM

Does the shifter make the clicky sound when you shift the big lever whilst not connected to the DR?
