Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

extremely flat. Today I did the most climbing I've ever done, 1600 ft of gain. Wanted to go for 2000 but hunger was kicking in. I'll try again next week. https://connect.garmin.com/activity/33047577

Ride from last night. It hurt pretty bad. I'd been off the bike for 6 days thanks to work and bad weather so I guess maybe my legs were a little sluggish plus my friend and I did a ton of work to catch a break of about 10 guys that got away right at the start of the ride. Pretty happy we caught them though, that was cool. 1st lap was a warm up ride of the course and lap 2 was the group ride. It's honestly one of my least favorite group rides in the area due to all the stop lights/signs and a lot of squirrelly guys ride this ride. Not a lot of cooperation on this ride either. Oh well.

Here is a ride I mapped out, in the car, that is happening on May 8th at 0800. We start at Mary S Young park and then the climbing begins. It is the first West Linn Tour de Muerte or Tour of Death. Brutal climbing. Basically every major hill in West Linn, where I live. Join the fun!

Looking at your rides makes me really miss living in SW.

It sucked! I was shooting for 2000ft but hunger and annoyance got the best of me.

Today's group ride that I don't plan to do anymore. Way to dangerous of a ride in town. Every time we got any speed up we were at the next stop sign. Closest I've come to wrecking ever and just not comfortable. Also, I think looking at this thread can pretty well give people an idea on the standard "average speed" question. Look at the distance, look at the elevation gained, look at the average speed. Look at the person's description to see if it was a group ride or solo or race or what and maybe some hints to what the wind was doing. Just saying...

It's a good race series and attracts all the local monsters, including a decent number of Cannondale employees (the race is a quarter mile from their HQ).

First hill ride, 25 mils total - think it's only a 900 ft gain, but still for a first ride up a hill, pretty good workout.

Hill repeats today. Pretty happy with it, 1100m climbing over 40km in 2 hrs.
Felt like throwing up at the top for each of the first two. Eased off a little.
Felt like passing out at the bottom of the third. Banana sorted that.
Raced a delivery truck on the final climb.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to do this ride in the Ouachita Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma with a dozen other riders that have been doing this route every spring for the last 8 years or so.

They call it the Talihina Triple. Plenty of climbing for this rider!

A head clearing solo ride, and my first weekend back on the road after breaking a collar bone a month ago. Felt pretty good... it's gonna be ok.... I'm feeling a bit Stuart Smalley today.

You're lucky to have such long hills around. This is what my training hill looks like: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/33447129

Lenght: 1,9 km
Elevation 80 meters

Saturday solo ride just to get out there and get a little more rolling hills than I am used to finding in orange county. https://connect.garmin.com/activity/33523798

Sunday group ride, first ride I did with a group, felt like a good start except that they meet at 6:45 (early for me but it was a nice morning). Excellent ride, except that I pinch flatted then got a sidewall blow out (which got booted) however, now I need a new tire. Felt like the guys were waiting for me for most of the ride, but hopefully it wasn't too bad having me there. Just gotta move faster for longer next time, and work on the climbing. Those mountains really kill me! https://connect.garmin.com/activity/33523792
