Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

121 miles through Northern Virginia on the W&OD and Mount Vernon trails. I'm really not liking the trails but roads around here are terrible. It was better yesterday in the rain when nobody was on them.
I ride the same trail for the same reasons, but after doing my first group ride yesterday I discovered some seriously awesome roads out towards Leesburg. Still though, riding solo on roads is kind of sketchy. The W&OD isn't that much safer though. Too many crazy people and pedestrians. I hit a girl walking this past Friday. It was totally her fault, but thankfully she didn't get any serious injuries and I didn't go down. 121 miles is still really good though! I've done 100 going in the same direction as you and at the same average speed, but I started in Herndon. From your HR data it looks like we are in very similar shape too. Want to meet up one weekend and ride?

Nice ride with a buddy of mine today. I love the loop, features a nice 1.8 mile dirt road climb.

After feeling like crap and taking a day totally off yesterday, I raced a 5k (run) this morning and was feeling so good, I came home and rode a loop I do quite a bit. Even though there was quite a bit of wind, it turned out to be my best time.

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/113582333

24.30 miles in 1:15:23. Only 1075 ft elevation gain.

First time I've seen an average speed of 19.0 or higher for a ride this long. I'm pretty satisfied, especially considering the first half of the ride was into the wind and uphill. Too bad I didn't know there was a sprint point or I would have attacked instead of sitting there spinning away like a ****.

I did a solo ride today which seemed beyond my ability. I am NOT a long distance guy. With the Big Dam Bridge 100 (miles) coming up on the 24th, I thought I better get used to longer hours in the saddle. Needless to say, I was satisfied with how this went.

Interesting pattern on the heart rate how it gradually increased throughout the ride. Did you turn up the intensity, or was your body getting tired?

Good eye, Vicelord. I'm sure a little of that was the "cardiac drift" I always hear of, but the bulk of the increase was due to starting out very low in intensity and increasing toward the end when I was more confident I had enough left in the tank to finish the ride.

Sounds good to me... you'll have to give me a bit though... I somehow managed to blow the sidewall out of my brand new GP4000 and I'm a little short on funds. I think I have the old Vittoria lying around though so maybe I'll throw that on for the time being.

Finished up my new single speed bike, and took it for it's maiden voyage. What a friggin' blast that was!! Crazy fast on flats, slow on descents due to 46/16 gearing... spins out at about 23-25mph. Climbs well on gradual stuff, but it's a pain in the ass on 10%+ grades.

Slowly building up to my first solo century. This one was 80 miles with one big climb in the middle, and in the end my legs felt like I could have pushed bit, though not much, further.

Don't laugh, but I just did the most climbing in a ride I've ever done.

https://app.strava.com/rides/1632180

This was the second time I climbed South Mountain. The last time was in may, shortly after I started riding again, and it took me 1:15 to do the 7.5 miles to the top... had to stop three times and felt like I was going to die. This morning, in 1:30, I did 24 miles to every lookout on the mountain....

Holy hell, if that's not progress I don't know what is!

Looks like a cool place to ride. Nice job. Here's my ride from this morning. Just doing big gear tempos up short hills. Felt good except for the damn construction detours routing me every which way.

My last big ride. The last 17 miles were in the car. I forgot to turn off the computer so was only 88 miles. Surprisingly enough except for the time all the stats were almost identical to my friends who did turn his computer off when we returned to his house.

WOW! I never knew Garmin had such an app that can record your routes and other activities as well. Probably bc I'm new to biking. For someone on a budge what would be the best garmin to get?

Cycle Oregon, seven days and about 480 miles. Great ride except the blue toilets and mediocre food.... Day six had some good climbing and 80 miles.
