Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My in-laws live about half-mile from the course, so I started there and rode the course once at a mostly tempo pace, but I punched it on some of the rollers and relaxed on the descents. On the main climb I saw a bf member (esamulli) and stopped for a few minutes to chat (around 38 minutes in). The upper part of the climb was packed with people and I went slowly through it, behind a pack of Spidertech riders. Doing the route was really fun and there were tons of riders out there. Many tried and failed to hold my wheel...

After the first lap, I grabbed my SLR camera bag (EOS 1D w/two lenses), which probably weighed about 10 pounds, and rode the route again. About 1/3 up the climb I ran into Urbanknight, stopped a few minutes to chat. It was still a while before the race start so I finshed the climb then came back to his position to get some pictures there at the iconic overhanging rock.

After the riders went by, I rode up the climb again. Ran into robncircus and his Herbalife LaGrange team, and had a little cold beer with them before going up a little higher, finding a teammate and friend and hung out with them until the riders came again. We had a great vantage point over much of the climb.

Continued on with those guys up past the KOM and to the descent. There was a particularly steep and twisting section that I wanted to watch and get pictures from. Apparently lots of other people had the same idea and bodies packed the guardrail. It got a little worrysome when the cars came flying by the off-camber turn with tires screetching.

Then finished the descent and went to the finish. Couldn't really get close to get pictures though. I couldn't actually even see the finish, just had to listen to the announcers. It was a real zoo, this is all I was able to get of Hincapie right after he crossed the line.

More pictures here.

Tuesday night is our local FAST ride, its about 40 miles or so and it was really fast tonight. I got dropped about 15 miles in, the ride was running a constant 30+ from the time we rolled into the group on the way out.

Riding in Albuquerque, NM

I'll post the last few days since I'm taking today off.

5/25:
11 miles at 5,807-6,121 feet elevation
I was just going for a shorter sprinting ride.
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/34644886

5/24:
27 miles at 5,296-6,133ft elevation
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/34644896

All of this is on a beastly Trek 7200fx, lol. Can't wait until my Orbea Orca is up and running.

I was running a little late in the morning (hmm, theme?) and had to rush to the start. Of course it didn't start on time anyway... Easy roll out through Summerland and the pace picked up on the 192, and didn't let up much all the way to Casitas. Short regroup at the top before continuing around. Most of the group stopped at the Lake but Aaron, Kim and I softpedaled until the group caught up shortly after. Fast pace on PCH and 101 into the headwinds and then conversational the rest of the way from Carpinteria.
Some of you may have caught this from the ride video thread, but here is the paceline on the 101 (freeway):

Solvang Loop again

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/34754427

A little faster than the last two weeks, mostly due to a longer and harder interval on the 101 on the return leg.

Nice job. I never made my way up there to ride when I lived in LA. I mostly rode around Palos Verdes.

Thursday night ride. Was supposed to be a recovery ride but it ended up being a bit faster than I wanted. Oh well, I still enjoyed it. Loving this weather. Lots of heat and my ridiculous tan lines are getting more ridiculous by the day.

I was fried after my pull, it was nobody's fault but my own. We had more people before, I was looking back to find the end of the line and I was surprised there was nobody else left.

The woman in the Columbia kit took a good pull, it's just that some others were taking extra long pulls.

You can see in the data that its a flat ride. My speed and heart rate changes after about 15 miles. I've been riding hard and am carrying a fairly solid 20 all day. Many people were commenting on the ride feeling fast.

Here's the same ride a few weeks earlier with an average of just under 24.

Today, which actually is my first ride with my new Garmin 705, I did a ride that was 37.24 miles with elevation gains totaling 3481 feet. Nice ride IMHO.

Beautiful day in the Appalachian Mountains.

RD

**edit, are most people here riding 35-40 miles with less than 1000 feet of elevation gain? Sheezzzz, if I could do that, well.,, I wouldn't be living in the mountains.......... just sayin............
