I splurged last summer for a pair of Hincapie bibs ($140) and they're great, though the next in line after those are (in order)
* Voler (I have a couple of these, including the Hammer branded. Awesome, especially for the price)
* Castelli
* Santini

Performance bibs are pretty good, I was not the biggest fan of the upper webbing. I've got 2 pair of assos I have worn this past season that I am thinking of switching to hammer/velos. The assos logo is boarder line obscene.

I would say... shameless plug below in my signature. The Hammer Nutrition bibs by Voler are well below $100 if you follow that link. If you've never ordered from them before you'll save 15% using that link. They will also send you a bunch of free samples.. gels, powders and stuff free along with your order. I have 3 pairs and they have served me well.
The Bergamo's a little more but have heard good things about them. They are also available from Hammer.

Any of the Giordana bibs from the Silverline and up. Good prices at Ribble Cycles (UK) but shipping will be an issue until the volcano thing sorts itself out.
Edit: Giordana bibs at Ribble.

YMMV but I've been very pleased with fit and durability

+1 for Performance Elite. I have two and they are great. I bought a pair of Gore Bike Wear bibs that were more than twice as expensive as the Elite bibs and I see very little, if any, significant difference between the Elite and the GBW. The padding on one of my Elite bibs which is about a year old is flattening out a bit though. You will likely be quite happy with the Elites - you should be able to get two for under $100 (Performance has 10% off on Tuesdays between noon and 2 PM) and they are usually about $55.

It's been a couple (or three) years, but I bought a pair of Giordana Silverlines on sierratradingpost.com for $50. I don't think I've gotten a better ROI for any cycling product I've purchased to date.

i wonder if it can simply be attributed to body types? I'm 5'9, 155-160lbs, and 33" waist. The large fit me very well.
