Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

two bikes....one pair of pedals

so I just bought a new bike and pedals, but i would still like to ride my old bike sometimes(rain, bad conditions, etc.). The problem is that i only have one pair of pedals. Is it okay to put those pedals on my other bike when i want to ride that, or will putting in/ taking off the pedals every time i ride put extra wear on the pedals?

surely if you can afford two bikes, you can afford to equip them both with pedals.

I would think it would be more of a pain in the ass than a problem.

Make sure the threads are greased;be careful not to crossthread; keep the threads free of dirt, and you'll be fine.

But it will be a PITA.

If you take two parts and thead them together and unthread them over and over, eventually something is going to get cross-threaded. Just buy some other cheap pedals for the other bike and be done with it.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

Get another set of pedals. If they're clipless, keep the cleats as spares or use them for another pair of shoes (or sandals, or whatever).

Better yet, use a bike for errands, shopping, commuting, etc., and in a week you'll have saved up enough in gas money to afford a second set of pedals.

This.

I've started doing a lot of my local (w/in 15miles) on my bike, I mostly started doing it because my car broke... but now that I've got it fixed I'm still doing it on my bike) I actually feel lazy if I end up driving the 5 miles to the store or whatever.

Just get a cheap set of pedals (new or used) for your old bike, ones that accept the same cleat.

The trick is to use the same shoes/cleats with multiple bikes, not the same set of pedals!

the problem is that i have speedplay zero pedals, so there are not many different types that accept the same type of cleat

If you are cash-strapped, get a used set from CL or ebay. If you are not, get a new set for the new bike and put the old ones on the old bike.

Then just get a cheap pair of clipless pedals, but if you're not going to use the old bike often then it might be ok. I have two bikes but alternate frequently so that wouldn't be an option for me since I don't have the time to be wasting on doing that kind of thing.

Or see if you can buy the floor model. I did that and saved a ton of money on a second set of ultegra pedals

One pedal on each bike. Problem solved.

Right -- I mean, people here talk about riding an easy 20-miler, yet there are drivers who daily drive a commute that's a mere 5 miles or less.

I think you're going at it backwards. Use shoes that work for your purpose, then get pedals & cleats that work with the shoes.

Either way, you can use one pair of shoes across multiple bikes by getting more pairs of compatible pedals. Or, you can get a pedal system that works with multiple shoes, then you can use different shoes across different bikes without taking things apart every time.

It's not nearly as difficult as you seem to think it is. Either that, or you're so broke that you should be worrying more about food and rent than you were about buying that second bike.

Put the clipless pedals on the primary bike and toe clip platform pedals on the backup bike... problem sort of solved.

Why do people always say that. What if I save up all my extra money over a year and end up with $3k, and I buy a bike that is exactly $3k. I would still have two bikes, but no extra money for pedals.
