Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Issue with Speedplay Light Action pedals

Hi,

I just bought a pair of new LA pedals to replace my old ones after a crash, and after installing them I can't seem to clip into the right pedal properly. It doesn't have the same easy float motion as the left (or the previous pair), and it's quite hard to clip in. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for to try to fix it?

Thanks,
-grox

Check that the cleat isn't tightened down onto the shoe too far? I believe the same 4 screws that hold the cleat onto the 3 hole adapter will cause the spring to stick if honked down too hard.

OTOH, if you just replaced your pedals and not your cleats, then I'm out of ideas

Also, for some reason we've recently run into an issue with the spring and clip mechanism. If you take the cleat apart, there is a black round piece you take take out...if you spead it a bit it makes clipping in possible. That piece spreads to allow the cleat and pedal to engage (you'll see it in the cleat, the black metal piece). We've run into a few where it won't spread properly and found if you bend it a tiny bit it works fine.
We've been laughing about the "light action" that's so tight you can't engage the cleat with the pedal.

i only have experience with speedplay zero's, but this may be applicable to LA's too, if you replaced the cleats too, new ones are very stiff compared to well worn ones, lube them good with a dry lubricant and really put your weight on the pedal. thats barring any actual mechanical problem though obviously.

I've not been able to resolve the issue by loosening the cleat or by bending the spring. I'm going to head back to my LBS to see if I can't get a replacement or a fix for it. Thanks for your help, all.

EDIT: I tried again, ensuring that the screws were indeed as loose as indicated on the box they came in. Tightened them as per the directions and all is well.
