Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I gather the thinking goes something like this:
Cycling is outright dangerous. So, we are bound to have some horrid accident which mangles us beyond all recognition. BUT, since we are forward thinking, we'll have a little tag on us to identify our shattered and battered remains. In essence, it is a morticians tag, which we thoughtfully don each time we ride.

Clever.
Wow, what a downer...

I've got a nice gash and rash from where the fixx id (dog tag road id) must've got caught up on something during a trail wipeout and raked down and dug in to my neck. Dumping that thing and going back to a wrist version.

Stories like this and others make me wonder why they make these things out of thin uncovered metal. You think for $20 they could put on something like a dog tag silencer.

Overall, they seem like overkill unless you have a condition or allergy that an EMT absolutely has to know about. A laminated card in the jersey pocket and saddle bag seems like it should be sufficient. I'd rather take the remote risk of having a delay in my family being contacted after a serious crash over the larger risk of being impaled or garroted in a "mild" crash.

CSI -- they still looked for a DL. Just saying... How much money did those guys make. I use and expired DL with wife and daughter number on the back.

Good reminder thread.

Mine has been lying in the basement all summer. I should at least clip it on my commuter bag.

Jiust ordered one. Have had enough crashes to know that my wallet will not stay in a jersey pocket.

I have my SSN tattoo'd on the bottom of each foot (Beirut '83, you had to be there)
My Road Id is on my wrist if I go farther than my normal 20-mile route.
I'm allergic to general anaesthetic, so it's kind of necessary.

What I'd really like is a bar code tattoo. I just think it would be simpler all around.
Under an arm.

I just keep my DL on me at all times. But the idea of a Road ID sounds tempting - and it'll be useful for snowboarding too, since I don't carry my wallet on the slopes.

obsolutely - My wife first asked me too...

I wear it when ever I'm riding road or mtn and on all my runs. Without it, no one would know how to contact my family. My wife would be in a panic when I did not return as expected and would be in a panic trying to call all over. I would rather have my family be contacted immediately than after hours or day.

After my memory-affecting concussion this spring, my wife is ordering me a RoadID. I've got a license with contact info that I always have in a jersey pocket, but you never know if that will stay with you either. The license allowed my training partners to call my wife when I was experiencing the amnesia.

Serious crap can happen, so having some way to contact a responder is a good thing. Doesn't have to be a RoadID, but they seem pretty convenient and high quality.

Everyone has an idea on the subject at hand, and each idea is right for them. Isn't it great we can all have the right idea for us?

See my previous post. I mangled my wrist in a crash because the metal tag slid to the side. It's now a permanent raised scar.

That being said, I fixed the issue with a little superglue between the band and elastic to hold it in place from now on. My allergy to Penicillin means I have to wear it and i can't find anything else as comfortable while I ride.

doesn't a license + some additional information underneath jersey or something suffice?

I wear mine too. I had a bright red tag in my top tube bag, clearly see-able. But during my accident I had to describe to the people who stopped where to find it. If I were unconscious they would not have called my family as soon as they did.

I now wear RoadID on my wrist.

That is, I had 2 memory-affecting concussions this spring. Both were low speed falls, hitting my right temple. Second time, I was by myself and a motorist was kind enough to pick up me and bike. Like waterrockets, I was conscious, but non-functional. The guy found my phone, called my wife and drove me home.

I just bought a black, Elite road ID. It's pretty loose around my wrist to make it big enough to fit over my hand, and the clasp seems like it will be irritating where rests at the bend of my wrist. If I don't like wearing it, I may go to the padded dog tag.

why not just run a fewcopies of your driver's license, have them laminated and keep one in the tailbag, or velcroed around the frame some place conspicuos? virtually no cost and if there happend to be more info on it than you like; simply black out those parts with a marker before you laminate.

I have one, the dog tag style. After a ride, I either loop it through my helmet's straps, or drape it over the bike's brake hood.

So, EMTs show up, cut off your jersey and start CPR as they roll you in the back of the bus. Your ID is no longer with you.
