Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

True enough. Although I wasn't planning to stop at 200 one month and then go for 400 the next. It was just some "goals" for each month recognizing that as the weather warms I would be able to ramp it up.

You never know until you try. Who knows; you just might blow away some snob who's been racing for years in your first race!

And so it begins...I'm off to West Virginia for a couple of weeks where I'll (as planned) begin working on my conditioning.

I'll weigh myself before and after and see what I can do in 2 weeks.
Nothing but hills, hills, hills to climb and open country roads to ride out.
It'll be frigid and it'll be barren, but it will be a beautiful way to begin my personal training.
I thought it'd be a mecca for mountain biking but I see more roadies out there than anything.

I'll "swing both ways" as I hit the Road and the Trails. I'll have miles and miles of dedicated bike paths and mountain bike trails to enjoy.
Planning to enjoy one great Christmas meal and begin hitting the road hard right after as I purge my body of all the holiday food I took in.

Thanks to those of you who've offered words of encouragement and tips. Will post pics once I'm there. Have a great holiday.

Good for you to set some goals. I think that they are all attainable.
For music, since you seem to like some old skool hip hop, i'll add the following:
-Tribe called Quest
-The Roots (the new album is amazing btw)
-CL smooth and Pete rock
-Lods of the underground
-Das EFX

Rock stuff:
Black Keys
Beck
New Kings of Leon album is good
Cage the elephant
Pheonix

I'm 5'10" and during the race season i'm just a touch under 170lbs and by no means look like a waif...just saying.

[QUOTE=2ndGen;11924179]Where I live, those slushy/snow covered road salt infested days when I can't ride my road bike.
We can have weeks here where the roads are un-rideable.

It's amazing what you can ride on when you try. Up here in Northern Indiana we get a lot of snow, lots of ice, sand, salt. I ride my road bike through it all, night and day , cold and warm, wet and dry. Much more fun than a trainer. Try it, you may be surprised how much u like it.

Riding Broadway is no fun at all. The bike lane is the worst part of it too. Let's see, you have a gazillion people on the sidewalks of Times Square, a bike lane with an occasional bike on it, and another lane with tables and chairs next to the bike lane. Whaddya think'll happen??? Even a cyclist like me doesn't pay attention walking in the bike lane.

Let me know if you want to do the grand tour of Brooklyn though. From Williamsburg to Bay Ridge to East New York to Bushwick to Bed Stuy, to Park Slop and Flatbush. We'll spiral inward.

In the context of the entire post, what I meant was that body fat was not as dense as muscle (for the same
amount of space they occupy). Wrong choice of words on my part, yes. But what I meant to say still stands.

I wasn't commenting on Northern Indiana. I was talking about New York City.

As difficult as this might be for you to believe, it's a fact...sometimes,
riding through slush filled potholes that open up in the winter is "not" prudent.
Sometimes, riding through conditions where sudden stops were impossible
because of iced up roads where cars just switch lanes is "not" prudent.

Don't know much about Northern Indiana, so I won't comment on what's possible for you all up there.

Happy New Year SS. Good luck with your new year's goals (if you have any).

Right now, I'm in West Virginia, but when I get back, I'll be all ready to keep up with you Zack!

I'll definitely hit you up when I'm back home in a couple of weeks.

Looks like it's going to be The Trails first...

Christmas morning (yay! A white Christmas!).

Looks like I'm going to hit The Trails first on my HT Fisher. Which is going to be great!
The roads should be clear here by Monday.

That's exactly what happened! It was in the low 20's with a brisk wind.
I went out in nothing but my sweat pants and thermal shirt and
sneakers (with no socks) at about 7 in the morning.
It was beautiful and silent and nice to wake up to.
Did you guys get "any" back home?

Yeah, I see NY's getting slammed! Nice!
I'm going to hit the trails tomorrow for sure.
It'll be a great work out.

I went from Rodney Dangerfield (Winter '06)

To thin white college boy (end of Summer '06)

It took 3 months. An hour on the bike every day, and a normal (ie healthy) diet.

The next summer I thought I was real good, so I got dropped in a race. I realized it would take a little more than 3 hours a week of riding my bike to compete in a bike race.

Now I'm practically Mark Cavendish

Shut up mikey. Just because you've gotten your ass dropped in a bunch of races and you post in the twitter thread doesn't make you a hard ass bike racer. You ever figure out your FTP or does that hurt too much?
