Forget January 01, 2011...
I'm setting goals now with at least a couple of outrageous goals.
Pretty boring for the most part, but I had to express it somewhere so that it's
out there floating around for me to return to and I'm not much of a blogger.
This is stuff I wanted to do this past year, but big career changes put a halt to that.
Any advice is greatly appreciated and flaming will be dealt with accordingly!
- Lose 30-40lbs (final weight will depend on what suits me best at 5'9".
I WON'T drop below 180, that's for sure. Below that is not my personal ideal weight). - Set up a "riding" soundtrack to ride to.
- Do my 1st Century (outrageous for me).
- Improve significantly with me 2nd Century.
- 500 miles of riding a month (once we get past winter's un-rideable months).
- 1 Week Cycling Related Vacation (either Road or MTB).
- Build an Über Bike (full plastic sensation in @ low 15lb range).
- Increase my average mph to high teens.
- Set-up a home shop.
- Get fully geared up for cycling.
- Become a competitive amateur rider.
- Enter and complete a Road Race.
- Develop healthy eating habits.
- Ride Broadway (NYC) from the north to the south non-stop as fast as I can.
(Okay, maybe just one stop for a pair of Papaya Gray's Hot Dogs! ). - Take advantage of every good riding day I can.

nice list, losing weight and increasing speed will develop together.
As for riding sound tracks, I recomend Thousand Foot Krutch, Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run, and Cake - The Distance for starters, and Powerman 5000 if you're into hardcore stuff.

The year before last when I first began riding I dropped from 248 to 198. Now, I'm at 220.
On flats, I'm good for high teens, but I have no ideal how long I can keep that speed
consistently because I run out of road where I live so I generally average 16mph on
my local loops of 3 miles going up hill and 3 miles down coming back.

"passed?"
Roger that..."past".
i have no idea what this means.
Carbon bike with best components I can afford.
it's not about the gear.
I know...but it's so much better when I ride with proper cycling attire and accessories.
on 500 miles a month?
("become" is in that sentence...500 wasn't a limit)
you don't say.
Not "on" an actual blog.

Thanks. So far, I'm going to have a mix of some old skool rap (Know The Ledge/Follow The Leader by Eric B. & Rakim, some Gangstar, Ice Cube's Wicked, Dre's Natural Born Killer, LL's Mama Said Knock You Out, Kool Moe Dee's I Go To Work, Big Daddy Kane's I Get The Job Done, Beatnuts, Big Pun, NORE, Diplomats and various hard playing, mid-high tempo songs with a nice steady beat as well as a whole lot of Freestyle music and definitely gotta have my Zeppelin, Hendrix, Stones, Guns & Roses, Wheezer, Lincoln Park and such AND mucho Salsa).

I used cyling to help me loose 50 pounds two years ago. My lesson learned, focus more on intensity than miles. I didn't have a lot of extra time but there are some pretty good hills in my neighborhhod. Adding two or three loops of these hills to my regular riding didn't take a lot of extra time, nor add significant miles (maybe 5 or 6 miles per ride) but made a huge difference both in weight loss and in my ability to drop friends on weekend rides who used to drop me. The impact on stamina was astonishingly quick, even before dropping significant weight so that just motivated me to keep it up. From a conditioing stand point I was getting twice the benefit because I became stronger for the hills irrespective of weight and lost weight pretty fast.
edited to add; If relevant to OP, I am 6ft tall, went from 245 to 195 in a little over 3 months. Besides cycling, I kept my daily calorie intake to under 2300 calories a day. I no longer count calories but have kept up my hill riding and 2 yrs later am still at 195.

you might learn something from some of the more "jaded" writers here. Some of them have been doing the bike thing for a very long time.

Where I live, those slushy/snow covered road salt infested days when I can't ride my road bike.
We can have weeks here where the roads are un-rideable.
Don't remember if I mentioned it, I was 248 @ 5'9" myself and dropped to about 200 myself in a few months on a MTB.
Back then however, I was Roofing, so that helped me get down really quick along with the biking.
Going to buy a trainer on Wednesday to keep working out on the days that I can't ride.
No.
But I am talking too much about "the thread" instead of the "topic" right now with you.
(I'd rather talk about the topic of the thread now)

I lived where you live for 15 years.
there are no unrideable months.
even here it's possible to get in some outdoor riding in the winter if you work a bit at it.

No offense taken, but nothing learned either. When advise is offered, lots is learned, I am not seeing advice in your post, just criticism, which is not the same thing. But I do see that your are in Binghamton. Having spent 4 years there myself, I understand why you might be grumpy.

And now, for a commercial (thread tension) break!

I have your emoticons turned off.
if you put away the sensitivity I'm sure you'll find the help you are looking for, even in the posts where you see only criticism. but let me make it easy for you.
I think your excitement is a great thing. I don't know why you are setting a lower limit of 180, which seems rather high for 5'9, but whatever.
I think it's pointless to become concerned with expensive bikes and all that stuff now.
I think it's better to find ways of learning to ride more, and in more conditions, so that you can maintain training throughout the year.
Having all these goals is good, but set some priorities.
And please learn to look at what many of us say with humor, as it is intended. Yes, really.

Pretty boring for the most part, but I had to express it somewhere so that it's

This is stuff I wanted to do this past year, but big career changes put a halt to that.
Any advice is greatly appreciated and flaming will be dealt with accordingly!

I WON'T drop below 180, that's for sure. Below that is not my personal ideal weight). Never say never. - Set up a "riding" soundtrack to ride to. try riding without music, it isn't bad at all especially in NYC where what you're able to hear around you is just as important as what you see
- Do my 1st Century (outrageous for me). once you can ride 50 miles at a good clip 100 won't seem so daunting.
- Improve significantly with me 2nd Century. see above
- 500 miles of riding a month (once we get past winter's un-rideable months). No such thing unless we're buried in snow the entire winter
- 1 Week Cycling Related Vacation (either Road or MTB). good idea
- Build an Über Bike (full plastic sensation in @ low 15lb range). You're better served dropping an extra 15lbs than getting a lighter bike
- Increase my average mph to high teens. This can be very misleading.
- Set-up a home shop. Not necessary for most repairs. I built up my bike without a home shop, but if go for it if that's what you want
- Get fully geared up for cycling.good gear for the winter helps, for the summer not so much
- Become a competitive amateur rider.
- Enter and complete a Road Race.
- Develop healthy eating habits.
- Ride Broadway (NYC) from the north to the south non-stop as fast as I can.
(Okay, maybe just one stop for a pair of Papaya Gray's Hot Dogs! ). while fun it's a lot of stop and go if you're looking to get a nice ride in - Take advantage of every good riding day I can.yep
