OP - talking about riding is one thing. That's basically what we do here.
Actually riding and keeping at it over the long haul is what matters. It ain't easy.
Good luck! Stop back after you've logged 5,000 miles or so and let's compare your goals with what you've actually accomplished.

I can't speak for you or Mikey or anyone else, but I'm not happy about the weather, or the forecast.

Patience, a realistic attitude and maturing my cycling mentality...more targets set for 2011.
Was just about to drop some coin on some Bling for the CAAD (wheelset, post, etc...about $800. worth);
Then I decided that money would be better spent on a KK Trainer that I know I'll use every single day.
I'll save all the "pretty" stuff for the Spring as a reward to myself when I've reached some of my targets.
Changing my priorities from personal "lust" (making my CAAD all it can be) to working on The Engine (me).
I'm looking forward to posting myself in front of my patio window facing east 17 floors up overlooking The Long Island Sound
with a nice compilation of hard-charging MP3's and working on myself so that when we get those good days,
I just won't be getting back into the groove, but will be improving on what I've been developing daily.
So, with a budget of about $300., I'm set on a BF Approved Kurt Kinetic Road Machine.
Anything else I should consider before making the purchase?

[QUOTE=2ndGen;11920949][*]Lose 30-40lbs (final weight will depend on what suits me best at 5'9".
I WON'T drop below 180, that's for sure. Below that is not my personal ideal weight).
[QUOTE]
Why not? I am 5'10" and currently weigh 155 lbs. I think this is the only goal you need to focus on: Become a competitive amateur rider. All of your other goals will pretty much fall into place if you accomplish this one.
You will be hard pressed doing that at 5'9" and 180lbs...

FWIW, I'm 5'10" and currently 179. I consider that 12 pounds (or 7%) over my race weight. Even at 167 I struggle with hilly races. Rollers are fine, short steep hills are fine, but any race with an extended climb is tough.

Good resale value.
Seriously, I'd put my money into my ride or clothing. As Grumpy said, you can ride pretty much all year long in NYC if you work at it. Dressing right for winter riding is a big part of the challenge. Keeping your bike in good condition is another. I'm way upstate, it's about 30 degrees out and I'm heading out for my first ride in over a week. The sun is shining and I can't resist, though I know I'm going to be spending part of the evening cleaning the bike.
