Thanks for the advice from those of you that have contributed.
Winter "officially" begins in 9 days on December 22.
I'll make that date the beginning of my training.
I'll spend the next week doing as much research as I can.
(diet, conditioning, gearing up, etc...maybe, pick up a CX beater bike for those bad days)

Don't over think things at this stage, you're better served building a solid base before you start focusing on specific training regiments. The key to riding comfortably in the winter is staying warm so get gear that will serve that purpose and hit the road, by the time Spring rolls around you'll be in good shape to start riding harder and increasing the miles.

Thanks.
High? For me, 180 is as low as I'll go.
Anything less than that and I feel like a waif.
From the waist down, I'm all muscle.
And I have a stronger than normal back.
25 years of Roofing built me up like that.
At 180, I have a 31-32" waist.
Muscle weighs more than body fat, so at 180, I'll be just right for "me".
I might actually settle in at 190lbs, but the target will be the same
regardless of where I end up...a healthy percentage of body fat (<10%).
Right now, I'm at about 14%.
I just want to get to what's considered "healthy" for an active 42 year old male with my height/weight.
The Bike Build will be during the dead of winter to balance out the physical side of cycling.
I want to use that as a meditative activity.
I agree. This is why I'll do some good reading this year from good sources and why I'll become more
involved with local events and surround myself with riders who are doing what I want to do.
I have them. First, ride more no matter what (whether indoors or out). Everything else will fall into place.
I'm trying to eliminate those things that keep me from riding more (lack of proper attire, training gear, making time, etc...).
I believe you, but see, that's why emoticons exist for forums.
Because words by themselves might not convey what the author is trying to say and can be taken the wrong way.

I don't know why you are setting a lower limit of 180, which seems rather high for 5'9, but whatever.

I think it's pointless to become concerned with expensive bikes and all that stuff now.

I think it's better to find ways of learning to ride more, and in more conditions, so that you can maintain training throughout the year.

Having all these goals is good, but set some priorities.

And please learn to look at what many of us say with humor, as it is intended. Yes, really.

That's EXACTLY what my goals are.

Good luck meeting your goals.
My cycling goal for 2011 is the same as my cycling goal was for 2010 - ride more.

Nice post; you've given me a bunch of ideas!
Interestingly, when I'm 165 lb @ 6'1", my waist is 34". I must be all lard hahaha.

Wait, you're 200lbs @ 5'9" with 14% bf? You must look like a short Conan. I'm 43 and 6'3" @ 195 (down from 220 - yeah) and 22% bf according to my cheap scale so probably worse.
I don't do the New Year's stuff either, but I'm aiming for 185lbs and whatever bf% come with that but ideally would lose the spare tire which has already lost some volume since I started riding regularly. I'm also hoping to ride up and down both sides of Vail pass. It's about 80 miles (Breckenridge to Vail and back) so I need to find something else to try that's 100 miles so I can do a century too, but the climbing should count for something. Hope to do both of those this summer.
Good luck on your goals. Maybe we can all inspire each other.

But I really need to get my "core" back in shape.
I whip back into shape quick once I begin to work out.

That was actually one of the the "why's" that I posted this thread.
If I found at least one voice of encouragement who's had similar goals,
that would be a bit of a boost to me. It's always comforting to know
others have been in a similar situation and have met their goals.
Nice to know that I've found more than 1 voice of encouragement.

Hey, did a little math. How about this for a riding goal?
Jan - 200 miles
Feb - 200 miles
March - 400 miles
April - 400 miles
May - 400 miles
June - 800 miles
July - 800 miles
Aug - 800 miles
Sept - 400 miles
Oct - 200 miles
Nov - 200 miles
Dec - 200 miles
If my math is correct that's 5,000 miles a year. Not amazing, but certainly a good number to shoot for. My thinking, Jan, Feb, Oct-Dec are less than idea months but if you can get out for 50 miles a week (say two 25 mile rides) that 200 miles a month on average. March-May the weather is a bit nicer so maybe four 25 mile rides a week or two 50s, whatever. That 400 miles during those months and Sept. June-Aug should be prime months so 200 miles a week during those months.
Obviously, reality trumps ideals like this but seems a good and reasonable goal to me. If you slack off in the winter, bump it up in the summer. Anyway, I'm going to try and hit these marks. I've done over 100 miles so far this month (not counting trainer miles) and should be able to do another 100 before the end. Seems doable. Not quite the 6000 yearly miles you mentioned but I think it's somewhat workable monthly goals. Adjust for your particular region and weather.
Oh, to those who say miles don't count, they do if you are trying to motivate yourself to get out. It's a goal.

JP - I'd try to smooth out those transitions, rather than doubling or halving your mileage from one month to another. Sounds good otherwise.
