Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heh, weren't you The Outhouse Five or something? I was on that year too - got a ride in Don's RV.

That said, I never made it out today. Too much water for my bike hah.
ding ding ding. It's not the water per se, but how messed up the roads become due to the inability of the roads to handle more than 2 inches of rain. It really does become unridable in many places.

I can't remember if it was 5 or 7, but that was it. A bunch of us got a ride with a family with a giant SUV and a couple of dogs in back. they apologized about the dogs, but they were nice and warm.

Our biggest problem today is the high water level in the creeks and lagoons coupled with seasonal high tides. Coast Hwy is closed in several places in North San Diego County until later this morning. My house is at +15 but there are 3 houses in my neighborhood that are less than +5.

The rest of the world, please note: Another reason NOT to move to California, as if you needed one. Between the floods, fires, earthquakes, riots, and gangs of Republican financiers/Democratic politicians/budget cloister-farks, t's just one disaster after another.

Save yourself!

Don't come here, no matter what the TV shows you on Rosebowl sunday. And if you live here, move now, and never come back.

Oh, the humanity...

If you move here bring a pallet of sandbags.

David, how are things up in the high rent district?

I do recall riding around T.O. during the Big Simi fire of 2003, plus santa ana winds, plus 100˚F. It snowed ash. I was excited to get on a plane and return to the rainy NE.

btw I have been out that way quite a bit, having many family members there.

Wet, Frank, wet.

We had the main sewer line replaced a few weeks ago. They back filled the BIG hole next to the sidewalk that leads to the main line saddle connection. They must have used magic pixie dust dirt that only plumber fairies use. It looked fine when they were done, but once it started raining, the ground sunk about a foot, taking the replanted bushes and the sprinkler line with it.

I really enjoyed working on it yesterday in the rain: slopping out the gooey plumbing-fairy-dust mud, pulling the plants and sprinkler line back out, and filling it up with earth-based dirt. I gave thanks to the plumbing gods that the city provides unlimited mulch. It was a mess, and wet, very wet, but a good opportunity to improve the quality of soil in that 4ft. x 6 ft. x 4 ft. deep section of our little front yard paradise.

But it's HELL out here. Hell, I say! Please move back to wherever you all came from, and warn the others.

And yes, Grumps, the winds. Don't forget the winds! Why anyone stays here, I have no idea...

I was bored this morning, so I loaded up the camera to see what I could find.

Looks like the worst is over though. Should be back on the road by tomorrow.

I wonder if there were bikers hitting Hwy 1 from Monterey all the way down to SLO when it was pouring the past few days back...

I'm usually with Al Czervik who considers golf courses a colossal waste of real estate, but I suppose they're a pretty good use of a flood-plain.

Looks like this thread is coming to a close. That's too bad - I was really enjoying watching Accordion and Grumpy try to out-snob each other.

I went out riding on Saturday in the rain for a couple hours and only saw 3 other people outside the whole time. They were all on bikes. Two guys wearing trash bags and commuting, and a homeless guy.

I started a thread in the SoCal forum about rain rides, and the "I would never ride in the rain" posts were about 50%. Bummer - they don't know what they're missing.

I like the rain personally. I'd prefer to live the rest of my life in a place that has seasons and weather and all that other stuff that mother nature is supposed to give us. Personally, I hate So. Cal weather.....especially the heat. 80 degrees + and I'm miserable. I'm miserable a lot. lol.

Taking all the "encouraging" advice like HTFU of STFU, I went for a ride today. However, it started snowing on me. For some of you, that's no big deal. Here just North of LA, it's a big deal. Only snows here every 10 years or so. Wife was waiting for me with a camera as I got home.

Yeah the Rose Bowl looks all pretty but the people who actually live in Pasadena have to deal with all the ****.

This is the most it's rained in a while, earthquakes aren't really too bad, but the fires get rough. We couldn't have water polo practice for several weeks because of the ash in the pool and air quality.

Fantastic! I'm over the hill, near Pico and La Cienega Blvds., and we've had only rain. As a kid, I can remember two snowfalls in the Santa Monica Mountains, and we've had some serious hail at my house a few times. I'd love to see it snow in the L.A. Basin and I'd be on my bike in an instant. But OP, what are you doing on a mt. bike? I hope you also tried riding in the snow on your road bike, too.

Uh, that IS my road bike. It's either that or the red one in my signature! Actually, I'm actively shopping for my first road bike in 26 years. Shouldn't be long now.

And in looking at the picture I posted, I'm sure MOST of you are looking at that and thinking "That ain't snow. You want snow...come here to (wherever you live that has more snow)". Well, there is a real accumulation on the road now. Pretty cool. Here in SoCal, we get all weird when it "snows". Come on "snow day"!

Bikes: Cannondale Synapse '06, Mongoose titanium road bike '00--my commuter. Yes, Mongoose once made a decent ti road bike.

For all of you out of staters thinking of moving to SoCal for its wonderful weather, forget it. What looks like a good sun tan is actually rust. Oh wait, that is what the Orgonians tell us Californians. Never mind.

Forget the weather. Stay away for the cost. My wife was recently debating on applying for a job in Michigan where we could make a 30% down payment on a new house instead of applying it to a 3% down payment on a 50 year old place here.

Ah, I see. I've done the same thing, photojoe. I used my mt. bikes for years as road bikes – with skinny tires - and completed lots of centuries on them.

I'm very tempted to get up early tomorrow morning and head your direction, so I can say I, too, biked in the snow in the Southern California lowlands.
