Hah! I have a Masters in Physics and spent three years at Livermore Labs in Pleasanton - the worst three years of my life. I'd much rather talk about toilets and idiots and eat good food.

You don't seem to understand... 1/10 of an inch of rain... the local news stations are calling it STORMWATCH! You can imagine what they are saying since Los Angeles has been deluged with 5 inches of rain since Friday morning, accounting for more than a third of the region’s average annual amount. Rivers of mud are flowing down Los Angeles’ famed Hollywood Hills.
The sky IS falling down on us right now.

Make of it what you will:

"This is far from breaking news, but southland motorists once again have proven that they can’t drive in the rain.
The California Highway Patrol is reporting 315 accidents alone between 5 and 9 this morning. Compared to the 43 this time last week, that’s more than 7 fold increase.
In addition to crashes, flooding also played havoc with the roads. In the Newhall Pass, the truck bypass lanes of the 5 had 2 feet of standing water in the roadway. The 10 freeway at Santa Anita was flooded out for a while."

You want to be an idiot, go ahead and ride your bike in San Diego in the rain.

Clan lee - It's funny you mentioned Storm Watch. When I first moved here from the Philippines 30 years ago, I was scratching my head when the news keep on saying Storm Watch. I look out the window when it's supposed to be pouring, only to compare the kind of "storm watch" we have back in the tropics and it's more like showers. After years being here I've learned to see it as a "storm watch" because I remember going back home after being here for 16 years the first time. I was like crying like a mofo thinking we were being barraged by bullets! LOL
Freaking streets practically flooded up to the waist-line after 30 minutes of rain...

But of course. You see, real wealth isn't a person with a new Porsche 911. Any moron that wants to dump $1199 into a lease for two years and drive 5000 miles or less a year can have a new 911. Now a man that is smoking in a new Porsche 911 is a man to be reckoned with.

Whoa. Way to highbrow the thread with car talk! I'm impressed
Anyhoo, for the whiners and wussies, here's something from a rider who rode in the Socal rain

Very true. By Thursday it will be clear and in the 60's. I grew up on the east coast. Thse storms we have in San Diego are quite pitiful but the effect they have on the city is stunning. This is actually a pretty mild shower by east coast standards. But 30 accidents every hour? Half the city is under water and there are landslides reported all over...not to mention all the new massive pot holes in the roads. A hard Georgia thunderstorm would probably destroy all of Southern California.

I don't think it's even close to the worst in decades. About 4-5 years ago one october we had about 10 inches in 12 hours at my place, and that was just the start of a pretty rainy season. The debris basin above my house was filling with enough water that the neighborhood was hanging out on the bridge over the stream feeding it, watching to see when it would overflow the dam. It didn't, but went pretty high up. So far the water in my yard from this set of storms hasn't gotten close to what we had during some of those storms.

Yeah, I was on it the year Mt. Laguna was an ice rink and that one lady broke her pelvis. Good times.

Yeah, I kind of remember that year. A few years later it was even worse and the weather got worse and worse going down toward Julian (snow and sleet). So bad that a bunch of us took refuge in a large outhouse until we could catch a ride into Julian. Most years it's just been cold out of Pine Valley and gets nicer as you get into Julian.

I used to say the same thing (and I'm from NH so I know weather a bit). But you have to realize So Cal is not equipped for this. There is sub par drainage on many roads including highways. In fact, there have been quite a few road closures due to landslides here. It seems we have nothing to complain about, but the city here is nto set up well for any weather besides sun. That said, I never made it out today. Too much water for my bike hah.

Yesterday I couldn't take the rain anymore. So I broke out the rollers, warmed up for 30 minutes on my road bike under the protection of the front porch, and then zipped around my neighborhood for an hour on my fixed gear (less to clean). I did the same thing today, except I skipped the rollers. It wasn't very cold, I stuck to quiet residential streets, and I had a blast. The hot shower after the ride felt terrific.

It's been raining here in NorCal too. Just as soon as school got out I planned on going on a lot of group rides and really putting the miles in. I've been off school since the 17th and haven't ridden since. This rain has left me in despair.
