Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

oh and so far i have saved 1175g (2.61lb) so i should be sitting right around 16.5lb. i think with the group and other things ill still make it under 15lb in the end but i guess we will see. whith a good light set of climbing wheels i would like to be at 14lb though and if can get to 15lb with the Williams 30s on i should be able to do that with a set of 1200g wheels.

Everything is looking great. I've been getting pieces that I actually need to ride the bike for now. Soon I'll be updating the stem, bars, and seatpost. I haven't weighed mine, but just lifting it up, it feels pretty light.

That'd be all fine and good except that it's 1 degree outside currently, and I returned my shoes cause they were too small, and my pedals still haven't arrived yet!

LOL. I'm shooting to be ready for spring time up here in VT. I guess a trainer, or some rollers will be in my future at some point.

Looks really sharp. Some things that might help - I got a sub 100 gram saddle from an ebay seller for $35. I didn't think there was any way it would be comfortable but for $35 I thought I didn't have much to lose. It's actually not too bad. I've done some long rides on it and commuted on it with a $20 pound backpack. I find it feels weird when I first get on it but as I ride I completely forget about it. Here it is on the bike:

Also, you can get some really light skewers on ebay - I have some KCNC skewers on the way that weigh in at 46 grams supposedly.

Ive got a 140mm stem on my bike for that reason and it is noticable faster when blasting along at full power.
What color stem is best?

i thought about getting a carbon saddle like you have but i found the SLR Fibra for a little over $100 and it weights 135g and is very comfortable so i dont think ill be switching it out. not to mention ive always had good luck with Sell saddles. i do plan to get some KCNC skewers though so thats definitely on the list of parts. thank you for your suggestions. how much does you bike weigh?

i think im going to sell the Alex Aclass ALX200 wheels that were on the bike in the first post so if anyone is interested send me an email or PM me. they would make a great trainer or training wheel. Price will be low and i can even throw in a set of tires for the trainer if someone is interested. i would also consider trades as well so feel free to ask if you think you have something i might like. i have the box the Williams wheels were shipped in so they will be packaged well for shipping.
i was going to keep them for the trainer but i hate that thing and rarely use it so ill let someone have them that can get some more use out of them.

I haven't weighed it in its current configuration. I'm guessing it's about what yours weighs. It was 18 when I got it, but it had some heavy wheels. I got the Rol Volants refurbed for $175 straight from Rol. That was a huge improvement. I have some Speedplay pedals and KCNC skewers coming. I want to swap out the bars and maybe the cranks too (although the cranks look really good on the bike I thought).

Keep an eye on the ROX rim tape. In my experience, ultralight fabric rim tape like the ROX and Ritchey WCS can crawl, leaving your tube exposed to a spoke hole. As a possible alternative, two wraps of Stan's Yellow Tape, stretched on uber-tight like it's intended to be, is still thinner and considerably lighter than classic Velox rim tape.

I forgot if you got new lightweight wheel QRs yet or not. If you didn't, the KCNC's are OK, about 44 grams/pair. The levers are small, but they've got a nice omnidirectional brass cam follower, not a chintzy plastic one. Aaaaaand they come in colors

Keep your eye open for a cast-off aluminum cassette lockring from a used Dura-Ace, XTR, Ultegra 6700 or XT 770 cassette. That's an easy ~10 grams lost versus steel, and they're reuseable. Make sure it's the size you need (for 11t or 12t small cog, as the case may be).

no i dont have light skewers yet. i do plan to pick up a set of KCNC skewers soon.
as far as a cassette lock ring goes ill keep an eye out for one but i thought you could buy one aftermarket as well or am i wrong? chances are ill be going with a 6700 cassette with the Force group though so i guess ill be good there.
the rox tape seems like it will work prety well but ill keep an eye on it. the backing was super sticky so im hoping it will stay but i guess we will have to see. i sure hope it does because that stuff is crazy light! 3g a pair!

Why?
I got it off a car forum, someone said that when they drag race their friends they always fold the car seats down for the same reason. I figure using a longer stem on a bike is the cycling equivalent?

Pretty sure those brifters are bricks. Maybe Force brifters and RD? That's all you would need to replace, right?

yes thats all i would need to replace. i plan to get Force brifters (maybe red if i can get them cheap enough or i get a ton of tax money) and also Force or Red RD. i will probably go ahead and get a new FD as well and if i have the cash i will go with Force BB30 cranks but if im short on cash i will just upgrade the shifters and RD and then the cranks later down the road. i think ill save close to 1lb going to force and a light chain. the stem, bars and post should save me quite a bit as well.

i recently switch from a shimano cassette to a sram and i think the shimano cassette shifts better so i will likely go with an ultegra cassette instead of a Force cassette.

I'm adding some Campy Record 10 spd cranks and Speedplay pedals. I also got a Shimano freewheel body for my Kinlin/Formula wheels. (just need the time to you know - install everything). Want to make a contest of it and see who can go lightest?

Do you weigh more if you stand on a scale with flat feet or if you are on your tippy toes?

sure lol.. what bike are you building up? im sure i should probably know. what weight are you shooting for? parts list so far/planed?

im still trying to do this budget oriented and trying to not go to crazy. as stated before the wheels i got arent really the best as far as weight goes but they are nice wheels and i should have a lighter set soon as well.

ive been shopping around for the group parts i need but i dont know if i should try to find a complete group or just buy each part separate. it seems cheaper to get the whole group but i dont want the brakes, chain, or maybe even cassette so im having a hard time finding just shifters, cranks and derailleurs. not to mention getting the cranks in BB30.

any recommendations for a nice light seat post? i was thinking about going with the 3T Doric team zero setback since i am going with a 3T ARX team stem and 3T bars. anyone know how well the 3T post works with a carbon rail saddle?

other post ive been looking at are KCNC, Tune, and Thompson Masterpiece. need a 31.6 w/ zero setback.
