Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

not sure how this "competition" will work since i doubt we have the same bikes or even started at the same weights but maybe most weight lost or something to that affect maybe? whats the prize for winning?

im still trying to do this budget oriented and trying to not go to crazy. as stated before the wheels i got arent really the best as far as weight goes but they are nice wheels and i should have a lighter set soon as well.

ive been shopping around for the group parts i need but i dont know if i should try to find a complete group or just buy each part separate. it seems cheaper to get the whole group but i dont want the brakes, chain, or maybe even cassette so im having a hard time finding just shifters, cranks and derailleurs. not to mention getting the cranks in BB30.
I'm working on the bike I posted above. The idea occurred to me because we're both doing the same thing and have bikes that weigh about the same I think. Mine was 18 pounds and some change when I got it, but that was with a lot of heavy crap on it. I shaved nearly a pound off with the wheel change. I also added the Thomson Masterpiece seat post. Those two changes put me in the low 17's. I'm going to add (or already have):

-KCNC brakes (-130 grams)
-KCNC stem (not sure what current stem weighs)
-different bars (not sure what yet)
-Campagnolo Record carbon ultra torque cranks ( - 200 grams. have this already, need to install)
-Speedplay Light Action pedals (-200 grams. on table next to me - can't find my pedal wrench )
-Kinlin/Formula custom wheelset (-200'ish grams. Not sure of weight but light - in the 1400 gram range - debating re-lacing with lighter spokes)
-Force/Rival shifters (-120 grams)
-Rival rear derailer (-30 grams)
-Dura Ace front derailer (minimal weight savings. on old bike)
-KMC X10 SL chain (not sure what current chain is actually. Came with bike)
-not anytime soon but want to add Soul C 5.0 wheelset (-500 or so grams from current wheels. -300 from Kinlins)

With the Kinlin wheels I might get sub 15. With the Soul wheels I might actually crack sub 14.

nice build. i think you are right though we probably do have similar builds/ weight savings. so keep me updated for sure. ill keep updating this thread as i do things you can do the same. i doubt i will be in the low 15lb range without changing wheels but we will see.

Will do. Forgot to add the weight savings of the saddle to my list - that was around 100 grams or so less. If I do everything minus the Soul wheels that should shave a little over 2 pounds. That should in theory give me a solid build for racing and be around 15 pounds (maybe less). Weight weenie'ism is a hobby unto itself. Need to go back and look, but what wheels are you running? I have an extra set of Kinlin hoops never used I could make you a good deal on if interested. If you can find some Formula hubs, they're cheap and light (and so far seem to work well).

i just got a set of Williams System 30s last week. i had originally ordered a set of soul S2.0SLs that would have been a lot lighter (1330g) but when i tried to pay for them using pay pal it keep giving me an error message and i could never get it to go threw. so i ended up getting a set of williams system 30s to train on and plan to pick up a set of system 38s later this spring.

the system 30s saved me 312g but i would have saved another 300g on top of that if i would have got the Soul wheels. the system 30s are great wheels though just not the lightest. they make a great set of wheels for training.
i might take you up on the hoops though send me a PM letting me know the details and what you would like to get out of them. they would be great with a pair of Soul hubs.

i just installed a new KMC X9 chain after breaking the Shimano HG chain that was on before. i didnt save that much wait with it (-2g) but boy was i supprised at how well it shifts! i would have got the X9SL but since i plan to get a new group soon and will need a new chain just went with the X9 since it was so much cheaper and will get the X10sl with the new group. its the same chain without the hollow pins and plates. i was shocked how much smoother the chain made shifting, especially up front. its a great upgrade for very little $. the missing link is also nice to have.

Either one of you want to buy a gently used set of Speedplay Zero ti pedals? 167 grams for the pair.
Wasn't me - I thought about buying one but never pulled the trigger. PM me details on the pedals.

if you need just a front alx200 wheel i would be willing to sell it cheap as well. i was going to keep the rear as a spare for the trainer if i couldnt sell the set but if you want the front then i could still keep the rear for the trainer. obviously cheap pm if you want details

Taking my bike to weigh it today. Put new handlebar tape and tires on - tires are heavy but got them for $8.99 on Bonktown. Hutchison Equinox - should be good for training. Wish the darn skewers would get here.

Nice bike Raven!

One of these days, I'll yank the pics of my wife's camera and post a couple of my Franken-Fuji ACR with Rival/Force. I keep meaning to do it. It would match perfectly with this thread!

I like the "invisible chain" illusion.

Ha! - Didn't notice that but yeah, the chain kind of disappears in the pic. Thanks guys - put the Record carbon cranks on tonight. They are NOT easy to install. Bike weighed in at 16.8 pounds after that. I think I could drop close to another pound with my Kinlin/Formula wheels and Ultremo tires. That might be optimistic but the wheels are about 200'ish grams less and the tires would add up to about 160 grams or so less. If I get a really light cassette that could add up to about a pound?

That's a testament to the frame that it survived an impact like that.

Very nice ravenmore!! looking good keep it up. so how much have you saved so far? i lost a ton on tires and tubes. performance has some really light tubes (lunar light) you might want to check out for a good price. i have pics of them earlier in the thread.

i wish i could weigh my bike right now but until i get a new hanging scale i cant. i do have a kitchen scale so ive been able to weigh each part i put on and take off so i do know how much ive saved.
