Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For me buying a trainer was a waste of money. I bought it so I could get in a ride when I didn't have time to ride out doors, mostly during week days. I live in So Cal so weather isn't an issue for me. I have joined a gym that has spin classes but honestly the trainer kicks my ass more than the spin classes do and it is mainly because the Coach Troy knows how to push riders harder than my spin instructor does.

Structure is your friend. I make sure that I have a very specific workout planned before I mount the trainer. For me, this makes the time spent both bearable and productive.

So how was it a waste of money?

I had hoped to get out this weekend for a ride and now the forecast is for another 6" of the white stuff tomorrow and more sub-zero temps (Celsius of course) over the weekend...

Damn! I'm probably looking at another 5.5hrs of trainer time this weekend...

My trainer and treadmill (yes, I run) are my secret training weapons in the offseason. When I only get in like 50 road miles per MONTH if I'm lucky due to work and family, efficiency counts for everything, and that's where these two weapons are unbeatable. No junk miles, just quality butt kicking, with great data reproducibility so I know when I'm slacking and when I'm improving. My coriding buds are always a bit horrified when I join them for the rare outdoor rides and manage to drop them on the hills even though they're outdoors way more than I am. Doing Sufferfest intervals counts for a LOT for training!

You ride as often as you can stand it if you're training for competition. If you're just in it for fun, ride once a week for an hour to keep your legs and body in some sort of condition. One excellent thing the trainer does is remind you how 0 degrees isn't really that miserable.
This ... same as on the road .... miles don't matter.
